G2) Research Survey for Homeschool Students

Oak Meadow is looking for students in grades 7 to 12 to complete an early draft of the Oak Meadow Scale of Student Autonomy. It will take less than 15 minutes, and the results will help us to develop a free resource for independent learners around the world. We need at least 500 responses in order to create statistical norms so that we can provide useful feedback to those who take the survey.

The Oak Meadow Scale of Student Autonomy is designed to be a self-reflective tool for students to evaluate their sense of independence and ability to take charge of their own learning. It will help them recognize learning independence as a strength and, subsequently, a wide range of educational opportunities available to them.

Here is the link to the live survey:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1yyGedmphdubFy54c9hg9ZDQZYDxqXNqUqG58EZwEAtU/viewform

All information provided in this questionnaire is completely confidential; individual student responses will not be used in any way beyond inclusion in the larger sample set. Please help us spread the word about this initiative by forwarding this survey to homeschool students and families in your community.

The goal of student autonomy—independent, self-directed learning and personal empowerment—is central to the mission of Oak Meadow and fully integrated into our rigorous education of critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving. Oak Meadow prides itself on graduating engaged citizens of the world who are compassionate freethinkers and active decision-makers.

MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1) Meijer Garden and Butterfly House
2)  Cool Volunteer Opportunity at Fernwood
3) Corydon Capitol Homeschool Event
4)  Notre Dame Alumnus Thomas Crisp, Ph.D. Speach on "Love and Violence"

1) Meijer Garden and Butterfly House

If you are interested in visiting the Frederick Meijer Sculpture Garden and the annual butterfly exhibit on April 25th, please email Andrea at andreamom001@gmail.com  Carpooling may be available, and admission would only be $3.50 per person if we get a group of at least 20 students. They have an amazing 5-story glass building enclosing tropical plants and butterflies each year in March and April, plus outdoor gardens and sculptures.  There are special activities and tours available for groups, also.

More info:  http://www.meijergardens.org/

2)  Cool Volunteer Opportunity at Fernwood

In celebration of Fernwood's 50 years as a public garden, twig artist, Patrick Dougherty, will be designing and installing a large one-of-a-kind twig sculpture on Fernwood's grounds in April! Patrick has designed and assembled over 230 otherworldly twig art pieces all over the world in the past 30 years. Visit Patrick's website to learn more about his work.   http://www.stickwork.net/

Here is your opportunity to work with a true artist! Patrick will be at Fernwood the first three weeks of April. He will need many volunteers throughout the process of creating the sculpture. Opportunities include harvesting materials, acting as a docent, and weaving the sculpture under Patrick's direction.

If you would like to volunteer to work with Patrick in April to weave his magic, please email Volunteer Coordinator Judi Jason jjason@fernwoodbotanical.org, or call 269.695.6491.

3) Corydon Capitol Homeschool Event

Corydon Capitol State Historic Site is planning a day of activities specifically devoted to home schooled students. This will be the third year for this popular program! We are able to offer several different programs/activities that meet many Indiana educational standards.  All of the activities will be centered in downtown Corydon, which served as the First State Capitol of Indiana from 1816-1825.  For more information on the unique history of Corydon, please see: http://www.indianamuseum.org/explore/corydon

The event will be held Wednesday, April 30, from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at Corydon Capitol State Historic Site in Corydon, Indiana. Students and their chaperons will be divided into groups. These groups will then rotate by schedule through stations where different activities or tours will take place.  There will be a 1.5 hour break for lunch during the day. Chaperons will be sent the schedule and groups ahead of time so they know the plan before they arrive.  Parents must register their students before the event and payment is requested at registration.  The entire event is $5/student with parents/guardians being free.  Payments can be sent by check or paid with credit card by calling the Site.  If you attended in years previous, we hope to have you back! We have new stations this year that I'm sure will interest your children.  Stations this year include: a tour of the First State Capitol, Civil War soldiers, a recreation of a one-room school house, learning a pioneer dance and manners, and pioneer chores and butter making.  Most of our stations are appropriate for ages 7+, but we have had students younger participate.

I am currently accepting reservations.  Families must register by April 25. They can email me at lcsteacher@juno.com or call the Site at 812-738-4890. Please let me know if there are any questions I can answer or if I can provide any other assistance.  Thank you and we hope to see you at Homeschool Day!

4)  Notre Dame Alumnus Thomas Crisp, Ph.D. Speach on "Love and Violence"

Thomas Crisp, Ph.D., chair of the department of philosophy at Biola University and associate director of the Center for Christian Thought, will speak at Bethel College on the subject of "Love and Violence." The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be on Tuesday, March 25 at 7 p.m. in Room 342 of the Miller-Moore Academic Center.

Crisp received an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame and specializes in the areas of metaphysics and epistemology. His lecture at Bethel will explore Christ's command for Christians to love our enemies, and what role, if any, violence should play in how we live out that command.

According to Professor of Philosophy Jim Stump, Ph.D., one goal of the lecture is to help attendees think more deeply about important issues. In a world where complex topics are often reduced to short sound bites and quick social media updates, "philosophers go the other way – we take the sound bites and show the complexity of the situation," says Stump.

This lecture is made possible by a grant from the Society of Christian Philosophers, with the goal of enabling philosophy departments at small colleges to bring in nationally renowned speakers.
