GENERAL INTEREST

G1) Brain Warmer Upper
G2)  App Challenge for  High School Students
G3)  Free Technology Conference

G1) Brain Warmer Upper

This week's puzzles:

1. Brothers and sisters I have none but this man's father is my father's son.  Who is the man?

2. Your last good ping-pong ball fell down into a narrow metal pipe imbedded in concrete one foot deep.  How can you get it out undamaged, if all the tools you have are your tennis paddle, your shoe-laces, and your plastic water bottle, which does not fit into the pipe?

3. What gets wetter and wetter the more it dries?

Answers to last week's puzzles:

1. The man is too short to reach the buttons above Floor 7.  When it rains, he uses his umbrella to press the button, and when other people are there, they push it for him.
2. Throw it straight up in the air.
3. Switch horses.

G2)  App Challenge for  High School Students

The School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI announces the 2014 Informatics App Challenge! This competition is open to teams of two to three high school students plus an adult mentor.

High school teams will flex their design and development muscles as they work to complete the best possible solution to this challenge on Saturday, October 25 in the state-of-the-art Informatics and Communications Technology Complex on the IUPUI campus. Cash and scholarship awards will go to the top three mobile app teams. More information is available at http://soic.iupui.edu/mobile-app-competition/.  Need to develop these skills? Resources can be found at http://www.appinventor.org/ and http://teamtreehouse.com/features/android.

Registration just opened at http://soic.iupui.edu/mobile-app-competition/. If you have questions, please contact Vicki Daugherty at vdaugher@iupui.edu.

G3)  Free Technology Conference

You and the high-school-aged students you educate are invited to attend the AFRL Discovery Lab's inaugural Virtual Technology Conference (VTecCon), a free large-scale virtual conference being held September 26 - 28, 2014.

We are looking for home educators who are ambassadors for STEM education and outreach. As a selected invitee, we hope that you'll share this opportunity with students (16 years and older) in your programs, or students who you mentor or advise. You might even encourage participation by offering to facilitate student discussions about the technological innovations presented at the conference.

Five technology areas (tracks) will be represented: Geospatial Technologies, Humans and Cyber Physical Systems, Serious Gaming and Mobile Apps, Cooperative Autonomy and Computer Vision. Although the VTecCon spans three days, each conference track is only two hours long and attendees can participate from at home (in one or more tracks) through a traditional internet connection!

VTecCon attendees will

hear about cutting-edge research from professionals in academia and industry
learn about internship opportunities for high school and college students
tour our virtual Deep Horizons research campus as an avatar
fire a virtual paintball gun on our Deep Horizons Paintball Field

This conference will span 3 days (September 26 – 28) and will cover a wide variety of technology areas including: Geospatial Technologies, Cyber Physical Systems, Mobile Apps, Cooperative Autonomy and Computer Vision. Each of these technology areas encompass a different two-hour track. Each track will offer talks from technology leaders in their respective fields, virtual tours, and panel discussions. We will also offer participation or internship opportunities through our Deep Research Institute.

The conference is free of charge in all respects: there are no travel costs, registration fees, or software charges. All that is required is free software and an interest in learning about cutting-edge technologies.

If you and/or your students are interested in registering for the conference or learning more about VTecCon, please visit our website: http://deep-horizons.net/conference.

MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1) Academy of Arts Drama Camp
2) Free Christian College Fair
4)  Colonial History Event--tomorrow!
5) Niles History Center Info

1) Academy of Arts Drama Camp

A Christian drama opportunity for homeschool students K-12th will take place in South Bend, In March 2-7, 2015.  Michiana Homeschool Drama Group (MHDG) will host a drama training team from The Academy of Arts (AoA) to work with our local students at the Christian Center Church in South Bend.  This is "the camp that comes to you"!  The team from AoA is a professional, well-trained group of young men and women who travel the country working with homeschooler drama groups. The AoA mission statement and purpose can be read on their website theacademyofarts.org. The group has been coming to Michiana to work with our students for years. They provide scripts, most of the costumes, sets and sound/lighting equipment.

This opportunity can be used for a Fine Arts credit on your student's high school transcript.  Our homeschoolers will spend the week being instructed in make-up, costuming, lighting and sound as well as the various elements of acting and performing.  The Academy of Arts staff has however, as their first concern, the spiritual development of young people.  Daily chapel and devotionals are an important part of this camp.  Putting Christ first is emphasized throughout the week.

After five days of concentrated effort, the final performance by our homeschoolers  never disappoints.  You will be amazed at what is accomplished in one week!  Experience with this group shows that the training they provide to our children has had an impact for eternity and brings glory to God.  Besides all of that, our students love it!!

Last year we had 46 families with a total of 85 students participate.  In 2015, we hope for even more students to join us as our high schoolers perform "Venture of 1620" – the true story of the pilgrims fleeing religious persecution and seeking freedom in the New World. Our elementary students will perform "Giving Thanks" – a musical that will remind us to be thankful for the sacrifices made so that we are able to enjoy freedom.

2) Free Christian College Fair

Bethel College will host more than 30 Christian colleges for the annual South Bend/Mishawaka Christian College Fair on Monday, Sept. 29 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Wiekamp Athletic Center. High school, junior high, junior college students and parents are encouraged to attend.

Christian college representatives will be available to answer questions and discuss options for those interested in a four-year institution. Financial aid seminars will also be conducted on how a college education can be affordable. The free event is sponsored by the North American Coalition of Christian Admissions Professionals.

For more information or for a list of colleges attending, please visit MyBluePrintStory.com or call 574.807.7600.

3)  Bethel Presents "The 39 Steps"

The Bethel College theatre department presents "The 39 Steps," adapted by Patrick Barlow, from the novel by John Buchan, from the movie of Alfred Hitchcock. Performances will be on Thursday, Oct. 2 and Friday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center – Auditorium. The Oct. 3 performance will be interpreted for the d/Deaf community.

In "The 39 Steps," a man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent who says she's a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called "The 39 Steps" is hot on the man's trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale. With the serious spy story played for laughs and the allusions to some of Hitchcock's other films, this will surely be an unforgettable evening of entertainment.

Tickets can be purchased online at Tickets.BethelCollege.edu or by calling the ticket office at 574.807.7080, Monday-Friday, 1-5 p.m. The cost is $15 for adults, $13 for students and seniors. Season tickets for all 2014-'15 theatre productions are available now at Tickets.BethelCollege.edu/PackageSelection. Follow the Bethel College department of theatre on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to see updates on rehearsals and production for the play.
