G5) Nature Writing and Art Contest

The BirdSleuth K-12 program at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology uses birds and nature to teach kids about science. Now, BirdSleuth is hoping to spark an eloquent and artistic view of the natural world with its first "Nature Investigators Writing and Art Contest." The contest is open to all young people from ages 5 through 18, whether or not they use BirdSleuth.

"If you're sending in a written entry, then please describe your neighborhood or school habitat, what you see there, what you do, and what you think or feel about it," explains BirdSleuth leader Jen Fee. "You can send us a short story or poetry. Artwork might be a drawing or painting of a real or imagined bird, a map of your local habitat, or a photograph."

Entries will be accepted through August 14, 2015.

Two written entries and two artworks will be published in the 2016 BirdSleuth Investigator Magazine, and several works of art will be displayed at the Cornell Lab during a future art show. Selected entries will also receive a free Feathered Friends Window Feeder kit.

"We've got a separate category for educators too," says Fee. "Show us your photos of young people exploring the natural environment, or doing hands-on projects for community habitats inspired through BirdSleuth's Nature Detectives lessons."

MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1) Jan Bret could come to Mishawaka
2) Lakeshore Lifelong Learners Annual Used Learning Material Sale

1) Jan Bret could come to Mishawaka

Hello to our local schools, teachers & educators!!

It's not often, but we sometimes get the opportunity to host a very special and nationally recognized author here at Barnes & Noble. Most of the national authors will go to the Indianapolis market because it's larger and they have greater attendance there. I'd like to change that status quo because I believe that the entire Michiana region will support hosting a national author. I am working with 2 of our local libraries along with a well established business to send a proposal to national children's author Jan Brett. We want Jan to visit us this holiday season along with the arrival of her new book "The Turnip!" Jan will only visit areas where she has a guaranteed audience of significant size and we need your help to entice her to stop here on her next national tour this holiday season! If you would like for Jan to stop here and are willing to commit to attending her signing, please share some information with me and I will keep in touch with you every step of the way!
