GENERAL INTEREST

G1) Brain Warmer Upper
G2) Essay Contest
G3)  Help the HUB/Save on Your Taxes

G1) Brain Warmer Upper

You are in a cabin and it is pitch black. You have one match on you. Which do you light first, the newspaper, the lamp, the candle or the fire?

Answer to last week's puzzle:
Three.  (Try it if you don't believe it!)

G2) Essay Contest

Start the school year off well by telling someone you appreciate them through HSLDA's 14th annual Essay Contest. This contest is open to all homeschooled students from ages 7-19.  It offers cash prizes and runs through November 1, 2015. Our themes for this year's contest all focus on how we express gratitude.

Students, write an essay in the form of a letter that directly thanks a person who has shaped your life for the better! That person could be a civic servant such as a sheriff, state representative, or firefighter; a co-op teacher, parent or grandparent, or church leader; or anyone else who comes to your mind.

We encourage you to let your essay be more than a contest entry; consider sending your letter to the person who blessed you. You never know how much of an impact your gratitude may have!

Category 1 (ages 7-10) – Using the principles of a descriptive essay, write a letter expressing gratitude to someone who has influenced your life. A strong essay will vividly describe the details of what this person's role is and what they have done for you.

Category 2 (ages 11-14) – Using the principles of a narrative essay, write a letter expressing gratitude to someone who has influenced your life. A strong essay will share a compelling story that documents how this person's actions have impacted you and/or your community.

Category 3 (ages 15-19) – Using the principles of a cause and effect essay, write a letter expressing gratitude to someone who has influenced your life or your community. A strong essay will clearly connect the addressee's actions to the specific positive outcomes that they caused in your life.

To get a sense of what to look for or avoid in your essay, you can view the judges' comments or read the winning essays from previous years' contests! You can find guidelines and entry forms on our website, as well as information about our other annual contests for homeschoolers in art, poetry, and photography.

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." ~ John F. Kennedy
