The National History Bee is waiving the initial registration fee (promo code: HOME) for homeschooled students in the 8th grade and younger. Though the academic competition provides a fun venue for testing students in a wide range of historical topics, parents should be aware that many of the contest questions emphasize skills and concepts outlined in the Common Core State Standards.

HSLDA's 2016 Art Contest has begun! The contest is open to all homeschooled students ages 7-19 and will run from now through February 1. Cash prizes up to $200 will be awarded. You can view the contest info and guidelines https://www.hslda.org/Contests/Art/2016/2016rules.asp.
This year's theme is through the eyes of a biblical character. Imagine one of the scenes associated with the Bible characters listed in our three categories below. Can you envision the smoke rising from the burning bush that Moses witnessed? Can you imagine seeing King Xerxes in front of you as you approached him without his consent? How intimidating that must have been for Esther! Illustrate something these people would have seen, heard, touched, felt, or experienced during their lifetime.
Each student is invited to enter up to two pieces of artwork relating to the theme for his or her age category.
Category 1 (ages 7-10): Through the eyes of David or Mary, mother of Jesus
Category 2 (ages 11-14): Through the eyes of Ruth or Elijah
Category 3 (ages 15-19): Through the eyes of Moses or Esther
Read the judges' comments from previous contests to learn on what features your art will be judged. Also, see the winning artwork from past years to get an idea of what has won in the past!
Guidelines and entry forms can be found on our website, along with information about our other annual contests for poetry, photography, and essays.
As always, your contest entry fee benefits the Home School Foundation's Special Needs Children's Fund. Thank you for helping families in hard times continue to homeschool their children who face learning challenges.

G4) Number Knockout Contest Cruise
National Number Knockout has announced that the 2016 competition will be held on a Carnival Cruise! HSLDA is a sponsor of N2K, which is a fast-paced mental math competition. Classical Conversations, another sponsor of N2K, will also hold their high school graduation ceremony on the same cruise. So if you want to combine ocean adventures with academic scholarship, consider entering the 2016 competition. N2K pays the expenses of the finalists and one parent.
The competition is open to students participating in any form of education. On May 1-5, 2016, 16 national finalists will compete in open seas for the $10,000 grand prize and the title of N2K Champion. The 16 finalists will be high-scoring students ages 9 to 14 from across the nation who submit a Scouting Video to N2K by February 27. This year, National Number Knockout is awarding an additional prize of $2,000 to the champion's educator.
N2K gives finalists more than just a trip to the Bahamas and the chance to win $10,000; the game helps students improve their calculating speed and accuracy. N2K is easy to pick up, excites students, and challenges students of all abilities. The competition was founded by 19 college-aged students who were looking to challenge themselves and help their communities. They improved their own calculating skills and saw their siblings and students in their local communities advance as well.

Lakeshore Roller Club is sponsoring Roller Skating (family friendly music) in a large, beautiful skating facility with other Michiana homeschool moms and young people.

2) Homeschool Field Day at the Detroit Historical Museum
You and your family are invited to Homeschool Field Day at the Detroit Historical Museum! Students will explore Detroit's history through a series of 30-minute hands-on workshops that will have them:
· attending school in Detroit during the 19th century
· handling and interacting with items from the fur trade
· comparing and contrasting automobile hand-assembly versus the assembly line and more
Students can pick and choose which workshops they will attend and record their participation on a Field Day Scorecard.

3) New Creations Art Classes
Dear parents, students, and newsletter/ newspaper editors,
It is not too soon to be thinking of the snowy days of January and planning for some challenging classes to look forward to. I am especially excited to offer this information packed overview of art history. We will be doing some amazing projects to help supplement our learning including metal tooling the Ghiberti Doors, romance on the high seas crayon resist, Monet's garden in watercolor, and DaVinci journaling. Thanks for getting the information out on my classes! Thank you for allowing to do what God gifted me to do: teach art!

NEW CREATIONS ART CLASSES FOR WINTER SEMESTER 2016
Gloria Seitz, a certified K-12 art teacher, will be teaching classes on the topic of Western Art History. This exciting class will be a seven week hands on discovery of the Renaissance through the 20th century of art and artists. A detailed time line including major movements in art will be covered. A trip to the Snite Museum of Art will conclude our study. The middle and advanced classes will be selecting an artist of their choice to study.
CLASSES WILL BEGIN ON, Tuesday, January 12th at Crossroads Evangelical Free Church in Plymouth, Wednesday, January 13th at Trinity Evangelical Free Church in South Bend, Thursday, January 14th at Hobby Lobby. The last week in February will be reserved as a makeup week in case of snow days and the Art Festival will be held on Friday, March 4th at 7 p.m.
Tuesdays, classes at Crossroads Free Church in Plymouth, IN are as follows: Ages 6-10 will meet at 3:30-4:30 p.m. Ages 9-13 meet from 4:45 -5:45 p.m.
Wednesday classes meet at Trinity Free Church in South Bend. Ages 6-10 will meet at 10:30-11:30 a.m. Ages 9-13 meet from 11:45 -12:45 p.m. and 7th -adult meet from 1-2 p.m.
Thursday classes meet at Hobby Lobby in Mishawaka at the following times: Ages 6-10 will meet at 11: 45-12:45 AND at 1-2 p.m.. Ages 9-13 will meet at 2:15-3:15. 7th through adult will meet from 3:30-4:30. 8 through 13 year olds will meet from 4:30 -5:30 p.m.
The cost for the seven week classes is $75 for the first child and $5 LESS for each additional child. You will save $5 on the total cost if you pay by January 4. Cost includes supplies (except those mentioned below), room rental, and Art Festival. Please reserve your spot by calling Gloria at 574-315-1858. You may register your information on line and print out a registration form at www.newcreationsart.com. Classes do fill up, so be sure to get your registration in early. Materials needed for the classes include 9x12" sketchbook, several sharpened pencils, a fine line Sharpie brand pen and folder for handouts. The 7th through adult class will also need a blank art journal (at least 8x10 without lines), a 12" ruler, 2H, HB, 2B and 4B drawing pencils, and a canvas. Canvas does not need to be purchased for the first class.

4) ISMHS Eco Science Fair--applications now available
The Eco Science Fair at the Indiana State Museum's annual Going Green Festival will return for its third year on Friday, April 8, 2016. Applications for students to have projects considered for the Eco Science Fair are now available via the museums website: http://www.indianamuseum.org/educators/k-12-programs
In 2015, 250 students presented individual and group projects regarding sustainable science practices and research. Projects such as biodegradable plastic, aquaponics and sustainable architecture were featured. Prizes were given to winners in the categories of Renewable Energy, Social Projects, Sustainable Agriculture and Other.
This year, scholarships will be given to winners thanks to funding provided by Subaru of Indiana. The 2016 Eco Science Fair categories will also be extended to include two new categories. The Eco-Friendly Products category has been created for those students looking to create the next new green product. The Bicentennial Connections category is for projects that connects Indiana's past with it future, looking to answer the question "How has conservation and sustainable practices from Indiana's past continue to have an impact today?"

5) Living Primitive Village in Indiana
Hello Homeschoolers!
We'd like to introduce ourselves and our organization, Ways of the Earth Living
Museum, to you. We are a new non-profit that provides a very unique experience
that is already proving to be a great resource for homeschool families and
groups. For the past year we have been constructing a primitive village on 250
acres just 4 miles from Turkey Run State Park, about an hour and a half west of
Indianapolis. What makes this unique is that it is not a reenactment, but truly
a living museum where Residents live year round in a primitive setting. Only
through experience do we truly begin to learn and understand about the skills
and lifestyle that sustained humanity countless generations. In this primitive
village we use primitive skills daily and are working toward removing all
manufactured items. The skills we use include building a variety of primitive
shelters, fire by friction, basketry, pottery, hide tanning, flint knapping,
using wild edible and medicinal plants, bone tools, food preservation and
storage, and so much more. Our programs highlight natural history, nature
studies and can be targeted at a number of educational goals.
The Living Museum will open to the public in April of 2016 and at that time
individual families can come for the day and explore and learn about the things
that interest them. At this time, however, we are able to work with groups for
specialized programs. We've had wonderful feedback from the homeschool groups
who have come for an experience with us. As the attached brochure explains, we
can create a program appropriate for the goals, whether social or educational,
the ages and size of group that you have.

6) Elementary Fine Arts Festival
Hi there!
You have received emails in the past about the Michigan Association of Christian Schools (MACS) Elementary Fine Arts Festival. Well, that event is coming up again, and I wanted to fill you in on the details!
Before I go any farther, I need to update you on some changes in personnel this year. My sister Grace is getting married, so another Mieczkowski sister (Lydia) has become the new festival coordinator, and I (Melody) will be handling homeschooler registrations. I hope to have the chance to work with you!
The 2016 MACS Elementary Fine Arts Festival will be held at Bethany Christian School in Troy, Michigan on Friday, February 26th, 2016.
As a former homeschool student myself, I can tell you that this is an excellent opportunity for homeschooled elementary students! It provides a goal to work toward, as well as an opportunity to receive feedback from excellent judges. I am a music teacher, and always look forward to this festival and how it motivates the practice and preparation of my students!
The Elementary Fine Arts Festival is for grades 4-6. I know with homeschoolers the grades can be a bit flexible, so just to clarify, the age limitations would be no younger than 8, and no older than 12.
Attached please find the registration forms for this year. Everyone who participates needs to fill out and turn in the Individual Registration Form with payment. In the "School" field near the top, just write "Homeschool". The Group Registration Form is only for those who want to register a group event (piano ensemble, instrumental ensemble, etc.).
For reference, here is the 2016 fee schedule:
- $2 registration fee (paid once by each student)
- $6 individual event fee (paid per event)
- $2 group event fee (paid per student in each group event)
Also, if you pre-purchase lunch, it is $5 per person. On the day of Elementary MACS, it will be $6 per person.

READING TUTOR
My name is Iveth Ortiz and I am a Christian certified special educator with a background in reading intervention. Teaching reading to struggling readers has been something that I have truly enjoyed over the past couple of years. I have recently left my teaching position in the public school system to launch a reading intervention tutoring business in Berrien County for private schools and homeschoolers. I currently serve the private schools in Berrien Springs but I am also serving homeschool families. I would like to share my services with homeschooling families in Niles. I give a FREE consultation and initial assessment to the child to determine the reading level. Then, if the parents decide to join, I will provide tutoring in reading to the child from my home office in Berrien Springs.

2) Homeschool Field Day at the Detroit Historical Museum
You and your family are invited to Homeschool Field Day at the Detroit Historical Museum! Students will explore Detroit's history through a series of 30-minute hands-on workshops that will have them:
· attending school in Detroit during the 19th century
· handling and interacting with items from the fur trade
· comparing and contrasting automobile hand-assembly versus the assembly line and more
Students can pick and choose which workshops they will attend and record their participation on a Field Day Scorecard.

3) New Creations Art Classes
Dear parents, students, and newsletter/ newspaper editors,
It is not too soon to be thinking of the snowy days of January and planning for some challenging classes to look forward to. I am especially excited to offer this information packed overview of art history. We will be doing some amazing projects to help supplement our learning including metal tooling the Ghiberti Doors, romance on the high seas crayon resist, Monet's garden in watercolor, and DaVinci journaling. Thanks for getting the information out on my classes! Thank you for allowing to do what God gifted me to do: teach art!

NEW CREATIONS ART CLASSES FOR WINTER SEMESTER 2016
Gloria Seitz, a certified K-12 art teacher, will be teaching classes on the topic of Western Art History. This exciting class will be a seven week hands on discovery of the Renaissance through the 20th century of art and artists. A detailed time line including major movements in art will be covered. A trip to the Snite Museum of Art will conclude our study. The middle and advanced classes will be selecting an artist of their choice to study.
CLASSES WILL BEGIN ON, Tuesday, January 12th at Crossroads Evangelical Free Church in Plymouth, Wednesday, January 13th at Trinity Evangelical Free Church in South Bend, Thursday, January 14th at Hobby Lobby. The last week in February will be reserved as a makeup week in case of snow days and the Art Festival will be held on Friday, March 4th at 7 p.m.
Tuesdays, classes at Crossroads Free Church in Plymouth, IN are as follows: Ages 6-10 will meet at 3:30-4:30 p.m. Ages 9-13 meet from 4:45 -5:45 p.m.
Wednesday classes meet at Trinity Free Church in South Bend. Ages 6-10 will meet at 10:30-11:30 a.m. Ages 9-13 meet from 11:45 -12:45 p.m. and 7th -adult meet from 1-2 p.m.
Thursday classes meet at Hobby Lobby in Mishawaka at the following times: Ages 6-10 will meet at 11: 45-12:45 AND at 1-2 p.m.. Ages 9-13 will meet at 2:15-3:15. 7th through adult will meet from 3:30-4:30. 8 through 13 year olds will meet from 4:30 -5:30 p.m.
The cost for the seven week classes is $75 for the first child and $5 LESS for each additional child. You will save $5 on the total cost if you pay by January 4. Cost includes supplies (except those mentioned below), room rental, and Art Festival. Please reserve your spot by calling Gloria at 574-315-1858. You may register your information on line and print out a registration form at www.newcreationsart.com. Classes do fill up, so be sure to get your registration in early. Materials needed for the classes include 9x12" sketchbook, several sharpened pencils, a fine line Sharpie brand pen and folder for handouts. The 7th through adult class will also need a blank art journal (at least 8x10 without lines), a 12" ruler, 2H, HB, 2B and 4B drawing pencils, and a canvas. Canvas does not need to be purchased for the first class.

4) ISMHS Eco Science Fair--applications now available
The Eco Science Fair at the Indiana State Museum's annual Going Green Festival will return for its third year on Friday, April 8, 2016. Applications for students to have projects considered for the Eco Science Fair are now available via the museums website: http://www.indianamuseum.org/educators/k-12-programs
In 2015, 250 students presented individual and group projects regarding sustainable science practices and research. Projects such as biodegradable plastic, aquaponics and sustainable architecture were featured. Prizes were given to winners in the categories of Renewable Energy, Social Projects, Sustainable Agriculture and Other.
This year, scholarships will be given to winners thanks to funding provided by Subaru of Indiana. The 2016 Eco Science Fair categories will also be extended to include two new categories. The Eco-Friendly Products category has been created for those students looking to create the next new green product. The Bicentennial Connections category is for projects that connects Indiana's past with it future, looking to answer the question "How has conservation and sustainable practices from Indiana's past continue to have an impact today?"

5) Living Primitive Village in Indiana
Hello Homeschoolers!
We'd like to introduce ourselves and our organization, Ways of the Earth Living
Museum, to you. We are a new non-profit that provides a very unique experience
that is already proving to be a great resource for homeschool families and
groups. For the past year we have been constructing a primitive village on 250
acres just 4 miles from Turkey Run State Park, about an hour and a half west of
Indianapolis. What makes this unique is that it is not a reenactment, but truly
a living museum where Residents live year round in a primitive setting. Only
through experience do we truly begin to learn and understand about the skills
and lifestyle that sustained humanity countless generations. In this primitive
village we use primitive skills daily and are working toward removing all
manufactured items. The skills we use include building a variety of primitive
shelters, fire by friction, basketry, pottery, hide tanning, flint knapping,
using wild edible and medicinal plants, bone tools, food preservation and
storage, and so much more. Our programs highlight natural history, nature
studies and can be targeted at a number of educational goals.
The Living Museum will open to the public in April of 2016 and at that time
individual families can come for the day and explore and learn about the things
that interest them. At this time, however, we are able to work with groups for
specialized programs. We've had wonderful feedback from the homeschool groups
who have come for an experience with us. As the attached brochure explains, we
can create a program appropriate for the goals, whether social or educational,
the ages and size of group that you have.

6) Elementary Fine Arts Festival
Hi there!
You have received emails in the past about the Michigan Association of Christian Schools (MACS) Elementary Fine Arts Festival. Well, that event is coming up again, and I wanted to fill you in on the details!
Before I go any farther, I need to update you on some changes in personnel this year. My sister Grace is getting married, so another Mieczkowski sister (Lydia) has become the new festival coordinator, and I (Melody) will be handling homeschooler registrations. I hope to have the chance to work with you!
The 2016 MACS Elementary Fine Arts Festival will be held at Bethany Christian School in Troy, Michigan on Friday, February 26th, 2016.
As a former homeschool student myself, I can tell you that this is an excellent opportunity for homeschooled elementary students! It provides a goal to work toward, as well as an opportunity to receive feedback from excellent judges. I am a music teacher, and always look forward to this festival and how it motivates the practice and preparation of my students!
The Elementary Fine Arts Festival is for grades 4-6. I know with homeschoolers the grades can be a bit flexible, so just to clarify, the age limitations would be no younger than 8, and no older than 12.
Attached please find the registration forms for this year. Everyone who participates needs to fill out and turn in the Individual Registration Form with payment. In the "School" field near the top, just write "Homeschool". The Group Registration Form is only for those who want to register a group event (piano ensemble, instrumental ensemble, etc.).
For reference, here is the 2016 fee schedule:
- $2 registration fee (paid once by each student)
- $6 individual event fee (paid per event)
- $2 group event fee (paid per student in each group event)
Also, if you pre-purchase lunch, it is $5 per person. On the day of Elementary MACS, it will be $6 per person.

READING TUTOR
My name is Iveth Ortiz and I am a Christian certified special educator with a background in reading intervention. Teaching reading to struggling readers has been something that I have truly enjoyed over the past couple of years. I have recently left my teaching position in the public school system to launch a reading intervention tutoring business in Berrien County for private schools and homeschoolers. I currently serve the private schools in Berrien Springs but I am also serving homeschool families. I would like to share my services with homeschooling families in Niles. I give a FREE consultation and initial assessment to the child to determine the reading level. Then, if the parents decide to join, I will provide tutoring in reading to the child from my home office in Berrien Springs.
