G1) Brain Warmer Upper

I have streets but no pavement,
I have cities but no buildings,
I have forests but no trees,
I have rivers yet no water.

What am I?

Answer to the last puzzle:
corn on the cob

Whose History Will You Bring to Life?

History will always have a mysterious side for us because we were not there to witness most of the events that have taken place. We'll never truly know what it was like to sit among the Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving, or to build bomb shelters in the backyard during the Cold War.

This year, we want you to explore that mystery! We can't time-travel, but we can study the past and learn how to rise above the challenges we face today and embrace a greater vision for our future.

There's a lot to choose from for your essay—depending on your age, you can select a person, day, or event from world history, U.S. history, your state history, or even your family history.

To get started, put yourself in someone else's shoes (or boots or moccasins) and let your imagination take you to their world!

Category 1 (ages 7-10) – If you could go back in time, who would you most want to have a conversation with? Why? What would you want to talk about?

Category 2 (ages 11-14) – If you could go back in time, what day would you most like to witness up close, like a fly on the wall, and why?

Category 3 (ages 15-19) – If you could go back in time, what historical event would you like to have been involved in, and why?

And as you ponder the people and events of the past, we invite you to consider how what you're living out today will one day become your personal history.

2) New Oil Painting Exhibit  "Futile Proposals"

Bethel College Assistant Professor of Art and Art Department Chair Michael May will open his first exhibit at the college, "Futile Proposals," in the Weaver Art Gallery. The gallery will feature May's art from Sept. 9 to Oct. 1, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

May's exhibit consists of oil paintings that depict experiments by a fictional, harmless lunatic.

"The work is layered so visitors can experience the work as deeply as they wish," says May. "On the surface, each painting is a joke. Upon deeper inspection, visitors might connect the jokes to more series concepts like racism or other human idiosyncrasies.

After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Ball State University in 2003, May held a variety of jobs in a direct care capacity working with "at-risk" youth, adults with mental illnesses and preschoolers with special needs. In 2010, he graduated from Miami University with a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting. He spent five years teaching painting, color theory and 2D and 3D design at Columbus College of Art & Design.

May exhibits his work in solo, group and juried national and international exhibitions and is the recipient of the Ohio Arts Council's Individual Excellence Award for his outstanding accomplishments in painting. He was twice nominated for the Columbus College of Art & Design's Teaching Excellence award.

Weaver Art Gallery exhibits are located inside the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center on the campus of Bethel College and are free and open to the public. For any questions, contact the Art Department at 574.807.7022 or art@bethelcollege.edu.

3)  Christian College Fair

The South Bend/Mishawaka Christian College Fair will take place this month on Monday, Sept. 26. It will take place in the Wiekamp Athletic Center at Bethel College from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Christian college representatives from a variety of colleges/universities will be available to answer questions and discuss options for those interested in Christian higher education. This free event is sponsored by the North American Coalition of Christian Admissions Professionals and more information can viewed at www.myblueprintstory.com.

Financial aid seminars will be conducted during the evening to educate families on financing their education. New this year, financial aid staff will be at the fair to assist students and families with requesting their Federal Student Aid ID, a code needed in order to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is used to determine a student's eligibility for federal aid and many colleges also use it to distribute institutional aid. Families can file as early as Oct. 1, 2016 for the 2017-18 academic year.
