G3) Free Bird Biology Lesson

Try one lesson free of a college-level, self-paced course called Ornithology: Comprehensive Bird Biology. It is a total makeover of its predecessor, the Lab's Home Study Course in Bird Biology, which has been offered for more than 40 years.

"Whether you are a home-school family, a teenager fascinated by nature, a mid-career professional with a weekend hobby, or a retiree looking for new insights about the birds out your window, this course and these materials will enrich your life beyond measure," said Cornell Lab director John W. Fitzpatrick.

The course is based on the all-new third edition of the Handbook of Bird Biology (required) and enhanced by a wealth of online materials including videos, interactive animations, quizzes, and additional reading, all presented through the Lab's online educational site called Bird Academy.

Try the first lesson and a sample quiz for free to get a sense of what the course is all about at http://bit.ly/2d0t9vM.

MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1)  SMWC Workshops Target Girls for Math and Science Exploration
2) Deep River Waterpark Reading Program
3) Free Educational Material

1)  SMWC Workshops Target Girls for Math and Science Exploration

A day of hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) will be offered at the Expanding Your Horizons event for middle school girls. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College will host this day of energy and enthusiasm on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Through exciting and interactive workshops, participants learn that studying STEM can be fun. The conference nurtures girls' interest in science and math courses to inspire them to consider careers
in STEM.

Nine workshops led by local female mathematicians, engineers and scientists offer topics on chemistry, computer coding, horse anatomy, robotics and more. These professionals will also relate how they use math and science in their careers.

Keynote speaker, Robyn King, serves as the WTWO/WAWV morning and midday meteorologist. At an early age, she had a passion for weather. King graduated from the University of South Alabama majoring in meteorology with a minor in math.

STEM careers are in high demand. However, women graduates in STEM fields are underrepresented. According to the National Science and Engineering Indicators, women make up half of the total U.S. college-educated workforce, but only 29 percent of the science and engineering workforce.

The Expanding Your Horizons workshops encourage and motivate girls to pursue their interest in STEM careers.  The fostering of math and science at an early age piques their interest and expand girls' knowledge and ability.

The $20 registration fee includes two workshops and lunch. To learn about all the sessions and to register, visit www.smwc.edu/eyh.
