2) MARK YOUR CALENDAR!  We hope you'll consider attending the South Bend Regional Homeschool Convention at Bethel College.  Convention Dates: March 13 & 14.

Keynote Speaker:    Steve Demme.  Steve and his wife Sandra have been married for over 29 years.  They have been blessed with four children: Isaac, 28; Ethan, 26; Joseph, 23; and Johnny, 21.  With God's help, they have all been home educated.  Steve addresses a variety of topics at homeschool conferences to encourage parents in their God-given responsibilities of raising and training their children for His glory.  His desire is to understand God's word and practice it, beginning in the home.  As a former math teacher who has taught all levels of math in public, private, and Christian schools, Steve is also the author and founder of Math-U-See.  He will be presenting both days.

Pre-registration rates start at $8 for both days, family and one day rates are also available.  Please go to http://sbhomeschoolconvention.com for full details and registration form.  We don't want anyone to not participate due to financial need so please contact us if you'd like to be a volunteer and get in free in exchange or feel free to shop the vendor hall Saturday from 3-5 for free.

3) News from Diane Day:

Thoroughly Modern Millie will be playing at Bethel College March 26, 27, & 28.  Bethel College will not be doing a school field trip matinee for this play.  They have offered a discount to home schoolers for their Saturday matinee on March 28 at 2 pm.  Adults will be $10 and students $5.  That is $5 off the regular adult admission and $8 off the regular student admission.

Thoroughly Modern Millie is set in the 20's and is about a girl who goes to New York City looking for excitement, fame and fortune.  She sets her sights on marrying money but learns that it is not what life is about.  There is at least one scene that depicts a bar and drinking so keep that in mind.

No seats have been reserved.  Please contact Bethel directly for this play: 574-257-3425.
I will be reserving seats for our group for the 2009/2010 theatre season which promises to be a family friendly line up of at least 1 old favorite.  Check back for updates.
Dessert theatre at Bethel will be performing "Dearly Beloved"  It will take place in July.  I will be getting back with details.  I will not be reserving seats for this performance.

4)  Just a reminder that we are taking signups for the Styles of Art classes which will begin on the week of March 17. That's only two weeks away! So if you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible: 574-271-8069. Looking forward to great spring classes.

5) Spring Prom, Saturday, May 2

If you are interested in attending the spring prom, mark the date of May 2nd on your calendar.  Plans will be finalized soon.  It is our hope to create a fun evening for high schoolers in a safe environment.

We are currently planning the menu for the dinner. Yes—food will be part of the night! We will also have music for dancing, games, and maybe some giveaways.  No date is needed—come with friends if you want and yes, dads can be the dates, too.

This event will be open to other homeschool groups in the area.  It will be held at Evangel Heights United Methodist Church at 114 N. Ironwood, South Bend, and ticket cost is $20 for an individual.  Pictures will be offered that night as well. Look for even more details (such as exact times and menu) later.

Please mail your payment for tickets to Dana DoBrodt, 58896 Elm Rd., Mishawaka, IN 46544.  Checks should be made out to The Christian HOME, and your payment must be postmarked by April 20th.  If you have questions please email me (Dana) after March 8th at hiddeneagles@att.net.

FYI--HOMESCHOOLERS IN THE NEWS

Homeschooler Among Top Contestants on TV Show

According to a recent article in the Arizona Republic written about Scottsdale resident Scott MacIntyre, "just everything about [Scott] is remarkable." At least that is what his former piano teacher from Arizona State University will tell you. Born almost completely blind, Scott was homeschooled and began training in classical piano at age 5. He also plays the guitar and drums and is an exceptionally gifted singer/songwriter.

After starting college at 14 years old, he graduated from Arizona State University at age 19, summa cum laude, with a bachelor's degree in piano performance, and was nominated by the College of Fine Arts as the outstanding graduate. Scott is a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship to the United Kingdom where he obtained his master's degree in performance studies from the Royal College of Music and Royal Holloway University of London.

Scott, his mother and two siblings, Katelyn and Todd, have performed together in a vocal ensemble, the MacIntyre Family Singers. Their mother Carole, who has home educated her three children for 19 years through highschool, is herself a student of piano, voice, flute, and guitar. As an independant musician, Scott has traveled to cities in North America and Europe for performances and frequently donates performances for conventions, churches, charities, and stadium athletic events.

With all of these accomplishments (including many more not listed here), Scott can easily be considered a success by anyone's standards. But as a homeschooled graduate, Scott is a shining example of a young person who is taking the education and training given to him by his parents and using it to make a difference in the culture.

Currently Scott is one of the top 36 contestants on FOX's television program American Idol. A singing competition airing on Fox, American Idol seeks to discover the best new or upcoming singer in the country through a series of nationwide auditions. A panel of judges give critiques of each contestant's performance. In the later stages of competition, the American public decides the outcomes by telephone voting.

One of 12 individuals competing on the program, Scott stands out not just because of his incredible talent, but also due to his character and Christian testimony. HSLDA would like to commend his desire to use these accomplishments to honor God in the commercial music industry.
