1) The Notre Dame Security Police will be offering a 12 hour self-defense course  taught by Nationally Certified R.A.D. Systems instructors. This course has its foundations in education and awareness. The course includes lecture, discussion and practical self-defense techniques, suitable for women ages 13 and older of all abilities.

When: June 22, 23, 24, 25; 1-4pm each day
(Meets Tuesday-Friday for 3 hours each class, you must be able to attend
each session.)

2) Gloria Seitz, a certified K-12 art teacher, will be hosting summer art camps for students. The classes will meet for four days in one week, for 1 ½ hours each day. Students will receive 6 hours of concentrated art instruction in various mediums including clay, printmaking, drawing and painting. Adults are welcome to participate at the high school level. An art festival will be held the last half hour of class on the last day of the class.
 
 
ALL ART CAMP TIMES are as follows:  Ages 6-10 will meet at 10 a.m.-11:30 p.m. Ages 9-13 will meet from 12:30-2 p.m. and 7th grade–adult will meet from 2:30-4 p.m.
 
ART CAMP #1: LOCATION: HOBBY LOBBY in Mishawaka. DATES: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday June 22,23,24,25. Room location: far right wall near fabrics.
 
ART CAMP #2: LOCATION: COMMUNITY EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH 120 E. Bertrand Rd., Niles, MI. DATES: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday June 28, 29, 30, and July 1. Room location: enter through the main (east) entrance and go left through the gym then right up the stairs to the classroom.
 
ART CAMP 3: LOCATION: THE OAKS AT SOUTH PAW FARM located  at 16323 Roosevelt Rd. just west of hwy. #331 on the south side of Mishawaka south of the 20 bypass. DATES: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, July 20, 21, 22, and 23.
 
 
THE COST for the 6 hours of class is $55 for the first child and $50 for each additional child.  You will save $5 on the total cost if you pay one week before class begins. You can send the check to Gloria at 18285 Amberly Ln. South Bend, IN 46637. Cost includes a $10 supply fee (except sketch book, erasers,  pencils and white cotton T shirt. These you will need to purchase).You may print out a registration form OR ACTUALLY REGISTER on line at www.newcreationsart.com beginning on May10.  Classes do fill up, so be sure to get your registration in early.  You may reserve your spot by calling her at 574-271-8069 even before sending in your reservation. 

3) Greetings Homeschool friends old and new,

Most of you are not on the mailing list of the Homeschool Hangout activity group.  If you are interested in participating in this communication and activity group please go to www.homeschoolhangout.blogspot.com and join the Google Group with the link on the right side.  You can check out what we've done and what we do there.  It is a place for regular fellowship and unstructured fun.  Your kids are welcome to create structure, infuse ideas, bring their favorite things, or just start up an activity in the gym. Clay Church lets us use their fellowship hall which is open to a carpeted gym.  

This year we met every 1st and 3rd Tuesday from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at Clay Church Firehouse Youth Center on Cleveland Rd. in South Bend. The schedule will probably stay the same next year. Clay "Firehouse" Youth Center is very centrally located.  It is a casual fellowship time. Kids had free play time where they invented their own adventures, brought props or costumes, Legos, board games or other toys.  We kept this time unfettered with scheduled activities and so the kids could look forward to having the freedom to choose what they wanted to do and the adults could talk and share ideas or bring something to work on and accomplish something.  Meetings were not mom's only.  Dad's and grandparents joined us too.  You may use the Google Group to let others know you're coming or ask if anyone with a certain age groups would like to meet you there.   We have not done this in the past but it should make it easier to find like age kids on Tuesdays. 

If we have a new child, the adults with similar age kids take the initiative to try to connect them to others with similar interest through introductions.  Beyond that, they are encouraged to join in an activity or invite someone to play a game.  

We had a steady group of about 10 families who came fairly regularly this year and many others who came on occasion.  

If you have any questions, please email me.  I will certainly not be able to find all those who might like the activities and who are not on the Hangout Group mailing list. It's not a complicated list of activities, but it is regular, reliable and fun. Therefor, I encourage you to join the list if you are at all interested.  The list and the group will become what it needs to be, but I don't make it more complicated than necessary.  Since we do meet in the South Bend area through the school year, this may or may not be for you.  You are ALWAYS welcome to come no matter where you live.  Parents are responsible for managing the behavior of their own children, but co-parenting also happens when conflicts arise.  On the GOOD side, we seldom have conflicts. 

This group is an activity group and a place to share ideas online AND in person.  You are welcome to post questions to this group if you join, if you are new to homeschooling and mainly if you plan to COME to Homeschool Hangout.  If you do NOT plan to ever actually VISIT Homeschool Hangout, please just stay in your current group and foster those friendships.  Each group meets a unique need, so it's nice to have options when you need them.  It is a place where we can meet face to face AND reach out to people we actually know.  Since I'm mailing this to the HUB and Michiana-LIFE, I realize you have a communication outlet, but those attending Hangout wanted a place to communicate with those they've gotten to know, so I'm opening it up for that request and to further some community within that group.  If you don't want to do this, you and your groups are all welcome to join us at the beach! Just mark the beach days on your calendar for this summer!  I'm sure people of all the area groups will be represented and and re-connecting!

OUR SUMMER PLANS!  We're off to Buchanan, MI to Fuller's Resort on Tuesdays!

Our beach days have been a huge success!  Kirsty and Mark Dykstra are inviting you to come each Tuesday this summer at Fuller's Resort and Campground.  They will give you the $1.00 per person rate EVERY Tuesday this summer!  The normal admission is $3 for adults and $1.75 for ages 12 & under. On Homeschool Tuesdays you just tell them you are a homeschooler and they only charge you $1 for all ages, all day.  I recommend getting there around 11:00.    

It is a small, clean, beach with great ice cream, many rental item options like tubes, kayaks, and paddle boats, and SHADE!  They have beach volleyball, picnic tables, grills, and a concessions area with hot dogs, hamburgers, etc., as well as great ice cream cones. 

The Homeschool HUB has also secured this deal with Fuller's, so it's a come one, come all deal!

This will be a frequent "Hangout" location this summer.   

Regular indoor meetings will resume sometime in the fall and other meeting locations and activities can be posted or arranged through the group site.

4) Pickleball Demonstration Open House
 
Friday June 11 at 10:30 am at Lakeland Athletic Club, 1912 S. 3rd St, Niles--

Pickleball is an extremely popular sport that is spreading into the Midwest from the Southern and Western States where it is played all year long.  It is especially suited to Seniors although all ages enjoy the sport.  We are targeting new adult players although kids are welcome to come to the open house.
 
Played much like tennis, the court is the size of a badminton court with slightly lower net.  It is played with paddles and whiffle ball and scored more like volleyball.  It can be an extremely competitive sport including tournament play or just played recreationally.  It is easy for anyone to learn.
 
We are introducing the sport and will be offering Pickleball programs and league play at Lakeland Athletic Club in the afternoons during the week and on Saturdays/Sundays in the near future.

5)  Volunteer opportunities

**If you love the music of the Southwest MI Symphony their marketing team would welcome your assistance.  The marketing committee would like to distribute posters to a variety of communities in southwest Michigan to invite people to a concert.  No one knows your community like you do.  Perhaps a few sites come to mind as to where you could hang the posters near your home advertising the Summer Series and Beach Series, with concerts in St. Joseph and New Buffalo .  For the dedicated volunteers who join the team and assist the Symphony to strategize how to get the word out and do the leg work to hang posters, you will receive a ticket to an event.

**Each community needs to be prepared for an emergency.  The Berrien County Emergency Management office, along with the Berrien County Health Dept is hosting an exercise where National Guard units can assess their readiness for emergencies and affirm their response to homeland security.  On Wednesday morning, June 16, volunteers will be "actors" in the establishment of a Point of Distribution by the Health dept, as if there is a public health emergency and people need to come and receive medication.  The medication will be simulated and no actual pharmaceuticals will be used during the exercise.  This is a great opportunity for families, teens or adults.  Just as in a real emergency, people come in all shapes and sizes and so volunteers can also play a variety of roles, just by being themselves.  The exercise will take place at the Benton Harbor Charter School , located at 455 Riverview, Dr. in Benton Harbor .  If you would like to participate in this one day event contact the Volunteer Center or Carlotta Taylor, Berrien County Emergency Services Coordinator at 269-927-5621.   
 
**Do you know sign language?  Would you be willing to assist a Benton Harbor church on a Sunday morning to sign for a new member who understands sign language? 
 
**The Krasl Art Fair is coming to St.Joseph on Saturday and Sunday, July 10th and 11th.  It is one of the best art shows in the nation.  Volunteers are needed in a variety or areas.  All of our volunteer shifts are for 3 hours.

- operations doing set up, weekend needs, and take down.  Times are still available starting at 8:00am on Friday, Saturday & Sunday. 
- Boothsitter, Saturday afternoon, 2:15-5:30, Sunday, 11:00-2-15, Sunday, 2:15-4:30. 
- Krasl Kids Zone Saturday, 10:00-1:00, 1:00-3:00, 3:00-6:00.  Sunday, 10:00-1:00, 1:00-3:00, 3:00-5:30.
- Sales and Information, Sunday 12:00-3, 3-5:30. (Selling Art Fair Stuff)
- Water Sales, Saturday, 3:00pm-6:00pm, Sunday, 9:30am-12:00, 12:00-3:00pm, 3:00pm-5:30pm
- Gift Shop, (inside the  Krasl Art Center ) Saturday, 3:00-6:00, Sunday,10:00-1:00, 1:00-3:00, 3:00-5:30

All of these opportunities are fun, including parking...  many past volunteers have said they meet lots of nice people.   It is a chance to be down where the action is.

The Fort St. Joseph Museum is looking for a few High School volunteers.  These volunteers will assist at special events and group programs mainly helping at craft stations.  Must be comfortable working with the public and assisting children of all ages.   Special events are at least once a month, group programs are when scheduled.

6) Music classes are being offered this summer at "The Music Academies", 115 North 3rd Street, Niles.


Beginning classes are a great way for the parents and students to learn if they are interested in a particular instrument and what they can perform within a short period of time. Cost of classes per student is $100.00 for ten weeks.  Fees include lesson books, proper playing techniques on each particular instrument, how to care for instruments, theory papers, handouts for classes and a recital at the end of the 10 weeks.  Sign up0s begin May 4 and run until June 14. 

Classes begin June 14 and run through August 19.

Learn to play the keyboard: Monday 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Beginning June 14, or Friday 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. beginning June 18.  Students learn to read music, music theory and music history and will have songs to play the first day. Recital at the end of the first 10 weeks.


Learn to play the Guitar: Wednesday 10:30 - 11:15 a.m. Beginning class June 16, or Thursday 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. beginning June 17.
Students will learn to play acoustic classical guitar, play melodies and chords, read music and tabs. Recital at the end of first 10 weeks.


Learn to play a String instrument: Monday 1:30 - 2:30 classes begin June 14
Learn to play the violin, viola, or cello in a 10 week session.


Summer Orchestra: Have you ever been interested in performing with an orchestra?
Here is the opportunity to play with a community Home school Orchestra. Two times are being offered for those interested in performing with the Home school Orchestra.  Session will meet Thursday mornings 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. or Thursday afternoon 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. Cost for those interested in participating in the orchestra is $60.00 dollars. Sessions will begin June 17 with a final summer concert August 5. Open to those who already play instruments which include woodwinds, strings, brass and percussion. All classes are open to adults as well as students. This is a great opportunity to have a family activity that is fun and instructional at the same time. Students will need to have their own instruments to play on or rental instruments are available.

Discounts are given for more than one family member interested in classes. Private lessons are also available for piano, violin, viola, cello and guitar.

7) August 14-15    Fort St. Joseph Archaeology Project Open House, Bond Street 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. 

A way to involve the public in the annual excavations that take place at the 18th century mission-garrison-trading post Fort St. Joseph . At the open house the public will be able to see a real archaeological dig in process as well as speak with archaeologists. Archaeological finds will be displayed and presentations on Fort St. Joseph will also take place. In addition to the archaeology aspect there will also be demonstrations of life at the Fort by 18th century re-enactors. This is a great family outing that will provide activities for the kids, and fun for all!

8) HOMESCHOOL "BOOK" SALE, Friday, June 18
 
Anyone and everyone is welcome to contribute.  It will be set up like a big curriculum (and miscellaneous homeschool supplies) fair.  You can bring your items priced to sell, and you can shop others who have items to sell. Those who help with the sale will have a special pre-sale time to shop, then there will be an open time to shop.  We will have everything from crafts, puzzles, curriculum, manipulatives, and much more for all ages of learners. 
 
The exact location will be announced soon, but it will be held on the north side of South Bend.  Drop off will be Thursday, June 17, from 2-6 p.m.  Pre-sale time will be Friday, June 18, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.  The actual sale will be Friday, June 18, from 2-6 p.m.  For more details please call Sharon Gregor at 257-8021 or email sgregor@comcast.net or Pam Smith at mrsauntiepam@yahoo.com.  This is going to be a great way to get some good deals and get rid of some of those no longer needed items.  Pam and I are hoping this will turn into a great way for all of us to help each other.

9) What Can You Do With A Sea Shell?  Fort St. Joseph Museum Open House June 19th from 10a.m. to 1 p.m.   Free Admission!  Children can explore different types of sea shells, create some great works of sea shell art, go on a sea shell hunt and make a piece of sea shell art that will be displayed in the museum.  Please see attached.
 
Also the First Annual Vandalia Underground Railroad Days will be taking place Saturday July 17th 10a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday July 18th noon to 5.

10) COLOMA VIRTUAL ACADEMY INFORMATIONAL MEETING

Coloma Community School District has partnered with JST, Inc. and K12 Learning to create the Coloma Virtual Academy.  Coloma Virtual Academy utilizes K12 Learning teachers, curriculum, and materials to deliver a first class program that students can do from home.  In addition, being a public school academy, it is at NO COST to you or your family.  The program is available for high school students in Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties

11) There has been a great deal of interest in the ANNIE Jr. Musical Theater workshop, but the high schoolers felt left out.  So, the director, Mahaffa Thompson, has designed a workshop just for teenagers (Jr/Sr High) entitled:  Becoming an Actor 101.  

The class will cover:  
--Foundations of Acting
--Creating a Character
--Physicalization (using imagination & research to create animals, young children, older persons, sicknesses, or infirmities)
--Voice Techniques  
--Special topics will be decided upon by the participants but may include: stage combat, Shakespeare, how to audition, how to speak with an accent, or musical theater.  

(All dates and times are negotiable but the schedule will be finalized on June 21st.  All meetings and classes will take place at Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Grant Street, Niles, MI.)

A parent/student meeting will take place on June 21 at 8:00 p.m. after the ANNIE JR Parents' Meeting.  The workshop will run from June 28th-August 13th with a showcase of a one act or selected scenes.  August 13th (a Friday) @ 7pm at Grace United Methodist Church will be the showcase.  Classes will be each Monday and Thursday from 4:30-5:30pm. or from 8:45-9:45pm whichever is easiest for all of you.  The cost is $120 per child.  If there are any problems, please let me know right away so we can work something out--I don't want anybody to miss out because of the cost.  If you are interested, please contact Mahaffa Thompson at lemahaffa@gmail.com or cell phone: 574-343-9138.

LMC Middle School Summer Robot Camp
 
This fun and educational camp is designed for students entering grades 5-9 in the fall.  This is a five-day fun and creative learning experience to keep kids busy during the summer. Kids work in pairs to solve challenges by building and programming robots using the LEGO Mindstorms (RCX) Robotics Invention System.  In addition to having fun, participants learn about mechanical and software design, problem solving, and teamwork skills.  Student teams will complete several projects and mini challenges.  Build your own programmable robot!  Learn some computer programming to control your robot!
 
*  Minimum age is 9 (recommended for ages 9 - 14).  No previous experience required.
*  Students will have a partner for most activities, and are expected to cooperate and share well.  Each day includes structured lessons and activities to practice construction and programming skills.
*  Student need to bring their own sack lunch, and be motivated and mature enough to stay focused on robotics activities all day.

Homeschool high school science classes: 
 
A deposit of $75 is required to hold a spot in either class.  Below are the age/grade levels we believe are appropriate for the courses we offer.  There are overlaps allowing for difference in maturity, science interests and math skill level prior to taking a course.

Lab costs for either class: $90 approximate for the full year. The $75 deposit goes toward these lab costs.

Anthony Beer is accepting new students of all ages in the South Bend , Mishawaka , Granger and Niles area.  His studio offers a wide range of opportunities for students to excel with his/her skills at the piano. The Studio exposes each student to many different styles of music, ranging from classical, jazz, religious and contemporary music. This enhances their musical knowledge in theory,music history and their musicianship and performance skills. His goal as a teacher is to nurture each student and to help them explore the beauty and love of music. He encourages all students to support the arts in their community.
 
He is conservatory trained as a classical pianist and teacher and has studied at Goshen College , IUSB and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester NY .
