2) Biblical Parenting Seminars

I wanted to let you know that the National Center for Biblical Parenting will be coming to the Detroit area to present two different parenting seminars. We'll be teaching parents how to address heart issues through the everyday routines of family life.

On Thursday evening we'll talk about relationships in the family. Particularly we'll deal with the concept of honor in some very practical terms. We'll offer parents tools and strategies that go deeper than behavior so kids adjust their hearts.

On Saturday we'll talk about helping kids take initiative in family life and be internally motivate to do what's right. Parents will gain a greater understanding of what we mean by a heart-based approach to parenting and learn tools to help kids make lasting changes. We'll be sharing practical, biblical strategies that parents can use no matter how old their kids are. These principles apply to kids ages 2-18.

3) Homeschool Girl Scout Troops

This is for all homeschool girls K through 8th grade who want to learn while having fun! We are starting new homeschool Girl Scout troops for Daisy Girl Scouts (grades K-1) and Cadet Girl Scouts (grades 6-8). Plus we already have a homeschool troop for Brownies (grades 2-3) and Juniors (grades 4-5) so that covers all our homeschool girls up to high school. All levels of the homeschool troops will meet at the same time and location in a SB library which is good for families with multiple girls and great for the scouts who can then interact with different levels for some activities. For the rest of the family, we even have a simultaneous homeschool play group for the little ones and the older ones can work in the library during the meeting.

Girls from all over Michiana are invited to come, with their parents, to an informational meeting on Oct 28th to learn more about the wonderful opportunities in scouting. In scouts, girls can grow into leaders, learn in a fun way, make new friends with a constant group of girls, and have new experiences (like serving at a soup kitchen, caroling at a nursing home, racing through a corn maze, having a magical fairy party, making gifts for a secret santa and whatever else the girls want to make happen).

If you're interested or you'd like to know more, please email Annice Barber at abarber1@nd.edu for all the meeting details.

Thanks!

The Bethel theatre department will present "Women of Lockerbie" on Nov. 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. and on Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. The performance, under the direction of Derrick Null, will take place in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/ Fine Arts Center – Auditorium.

Loosely inspired by a true story, the "Women of Lockerbie" is written by Deborah Brevoort in the structure of a Greek tragedy. The play addresses the challenging topic of terrorism, as well as other social issues often portrayed in modern news mediums.

A New Jersey mother roams the hills of Lockerbie Scotland, looking for her son's remains which were lost in the crash of Pan Am 103. In her pursuit, she meets the women of Lockerbie, who are fighting the U.S. government to obtain the clothing of the victims found in the plane's wreckage. Determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love, the women want to wash the clothes of the dead and return them to the victims' families.

"The theatre department chose this play to … enter meaningful conversation about terrorism and how we should respond to it among other social issues," explains Null. "Directly following the productions, the cast will have a talk back with the audience to discuss the issues that are brought up."

Tickets are $10 each and will become available on Oct. 31. Only 80 tickets are available for each performance. For questions or more information, contact the theatre office at 574.807.7747.

10) Fernwood Exhibits

The Nest Series by Sharon Beals
Now in Fernwood's Gallery

Breathtaking, large format, high resolution nest photos by California artist Sharon Beals are on display in Fernwood's Gallery through November 13. The exhibit showcases thirty, larger than life bird nest photographs captured against a dramatic black background. Beals compiled her nest photos into a new book, Nests: Fifty Nests and the Birds That Built Them, released in the spring and available for purchase in Fernwood's gift shop.

Beals will be at Fernwood on On Saturday, October 22.  Meet Beals in the Gallery between 2:00 and 4:00 pm; free with paid Fernwood admission. Copies of her book will be available for purchase and signing.

Beals became interested in bird migration and habitat preservation and restoration after reading the book Living on the Wind by Scott Wiedensal. The reading led to the wonder of birds' nests as architectural feats that contain botanical evidence of the habitat in which they are built. The Nest Series was created using specimen nests and eggs, dating from the 1800s to present day, from collections at the California Academy of Sciences, the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, and the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology.

Beals' work has been featured in Audubon Magazine and Scientific American, and can be found in private and public collections throughout California and beyond. "Fernwood is very pleased to present this striking exhibit of Sharon's artwork," said Carol Line, Executive Director of Fernwood. "An exhibit such as Sharon's will not likely be seen again in our area."

Railway Garden

October is the last month of our whimsical outdoor Railway Garden exhibit for this season. Decorated for Halloween, our special garden is ready to thrill kids and those who are kids at heart. We have a greater need for volunteers in the Railway Garden this time of year, as some of our dedicated volunteer staff have left for warmer climates or have returned to high school or college. Weekdays are very important with visiting school groups, and "Pure Michigan" fall attractions bring many visitors to Fernwood on the weekends. Please help wrap up the Railway Garden season by volunteering 2-3 hours this October. Thank you!

I also would like to sincerely thank all who have volunteered this season. Fernwood relies on its volunteers, and you haven't let us down!

Come see the Railway Garden once more before it closes for the season on October 30!
