3) Michigan Historical Play Shipwrecked!

The Michigan Historical Center in Lansing invites you to bring your school group to see the original play Shipwrecked!, an original drama about a family on the Great Lakes . Created for elementary and middle school audiences by Ann Arbor's award-winning Wild Swan Theater, the play offers an inspiring opportunity for students to begin exploring the role of the lakes in Michigan's past, present and future.

Shipwrecked! is an exciting sailing story, set in 1893, that follows the travails of twelve- year-old Aaron Buchanan whose family's schooner is caught in a fierce storm while he is at the helm. Young as he is, Aaron has sailed with his parents for years, ferrying cargo from their home port of Detroit to ports along the Great Lakes. As the family is returning from Sault Ste. Marie on Lake Huron in November with a huge load of Christmas trees, they are caught in a ferocious gale that sweeps through Thunder Bay —infamously known as Shipwreck Alley. With assistance from the lighthouse keepers on Thunder Bay Island , a crew of surfmen from the lifesaving station brave 40-knot winds and sixteen-foot waves in a daring rescue.

Wild Swan and its partners have developed educational materials to accompany the play and are offering a traveling trunk for loan to classrooms. One group or class will be chosen by random drawing from reservations received by March 16 to participate in a post-performance workshop with actors and Wild Swan staff. All performances are signed/shadow-interpreted for the hearing impaired.

Performance dates: Tuesday, March 27, 2012 and Wednesday, March 28, 2012
Time: 10:30 AM
Duration: About an hour
Location: Michigan Library & Historical Center, Forum Auditorium

4) America's Battle of the Books

Open to all area homeschoolers, Lakeshore Lifelong Learners (a network for homeschoolers) is planning a Battle of the Books for June!  Battling groups will be 4th – 6th grade, 6th - 8th grade and high schoolers.

This Battle of the Books will be held in mid to late June.  "The competitions are similar in style to the TV series Family Feud or Whiz Kids styles of competition." Teams of 4-6 children will compete.  You will sign up as an individual and teams are formed the day of the event.  There will be a small fee ($5 or less) per participant.

The book list can be found at  http://www.battleofthebooks.org/.  We'll use the standard book list for 4-6th and 6th-8th grades.   Our expectation is that participants would read a minimum of 5 books prior to the battle.  (Each list has 30 titles.)  The high school list is 2011-12 Combination list: Easy Reading, Classic, and Historical.

To prepare for the battle, optional study/discussion groups will be offered regularly at Lincoln Township Library and Benton Harbor Library.  Participants may choose to attend as often as they would like.  During these group meetings they can share the books they have read and hear from others.  We will have a sheet to guide the students in what to pay special attention to while reading; this information can also be shared in the study group.

Please join us at the upcoming study/discussion group meeting to learn more or just see what it is like.  Wed  March 28th 2:15 Benton Harbor Library

If you are interested in learning more please attend one of the above meetings.  If unable to attend you may contact Mary Ann 449-3668 or lakeshorelifelonglearners@hotmail.com for future dates, additional information, or questions.

5) Homeschool Tennis

Hello everyone: We are still working on the tennis team, and thank everyone for their participation.  We really need at least 8 tennis players to keep this going.  So if you could please forward on to any families who may want to join, it would be great and appreciated.

Here is the information everyone is asking about:

DAY:    Tuesdays; (if every Tuesday is too much you/we can do every other Tuesday.  We just need a head count to reserve the courts)
TIME:    11AM-12PM
LOCATION: Notre Dame Eck Center--once the weather is nicer, we will practice outside.
AGES: 8 and up

BRING: comfortable clothes, non marking gym shoes.  The shoes seem to be an issue.  Please note: Noe has a few size 7 available used but willing to give them for free.  Shoes won't be an issue when we can practice outside.  It's just Notre Dame has nice inside courts and they don't want them scuffed up.  Racquet- We have a few extras if anyone would like to borrow- we have plenty, Noe has also stated he has some.

PRICES: Many people have been calling and emailing about prices. Since we have to practice inside during inclimate weather there are court fees when we practice inside: $4.00 cash; if we play outside there will NOT be any court fees.  The instructor fees: $8.00 per practice- this may be paid in cash or check, weekly or by the month.

REGISTRATION:  There is NO registration, no registration fees, it is just a show up, play and have fun. Season: Since this is a start up we have not really set the season.  At this point it will not be over the summer.  Noe has stated he is willing to coach through the spring.  But we can all discuss as we get together on Tuesdays.

I hope this answers many of your questions.  John, my husband, will be helping Noe, so if you have any questions please feel free to speak with him or Noe or email me.  If you have any other questions e-mail anytime or call.

Please one more request: If you are thinking you want to play- please email me so we can set up a group email.
