G1)  Computer Programing Space Challenge (for teens to adults)

Zero Robotics Autonomous Space Capture Challenge

NASA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT's Space Systems Laboratory are offering the opportunity to design experiments that will be tested in space aboard the International Space Station.

The Zero Robotics Autonomous Space Capture Challenge is a programming tournament that uses bowling ball-sized spherical satellites aboard the International Space Station. These Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites, or SPHERES, are used inside the space station to test maneuvers for spacecraft performing autonomous rendezvous and docking.

This challenge opens the SPHERES satellite research platform to the general public for the first time. The goal of the tournament is to write a computer program to control a satellite to dock with a space object that may be tumbling through space. The best algorithm submissions from simulation competitions will be tested in microgravity on real SPHERES satellites aboard the International Space Station.

The Zero Robotics Autonomous Space Capture Challenge is open to anyone 13 years of age or older who meets eligibility requirements. Participants may work individually or in teams of up to 50 members to write their own algorithms to fly the satellites in the station.

The contest runs March 28 - April 25, 2012. Registration is now open and teams must join the competition by April 20, 2012. For more information, visit http://www.zerorobotics.org/web/zero-robotics/tournament-details?tournamentId=6.

G2)  Free Webcast on Black Holes

Mathematical Models: Black Holes Web Seminar

As part of a series of electronic professional development experiences for educators, the NASA Explorer Schools and Learning Environments and Research Network, or LE&RN, projects are hosting a 60-minute live professional development Web seminar for educators on March 29, 2012, at 8 p.m. EDT. Misconceptions about black holes will be addressed, as participants learn background information about the structure and behavior of one of the universe's most mysterious and spectacular bodies. Learn how to derive the equations used in the Black Hole Math problem set for students to better understand the physics of black holes.

MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1) Homeschool Showcase!
2) Silverhawks Fundraiser Available
3) Bethel College Hosts Michiana Elite Bird Fair
4) NACHS Used Book Sale

1) Homeschool Showcase!

Has your homeschool student done something great this year?  Learned something interesting he or she would like to share?  Projects, science experiments, artwork, musical performaces, skits, speeches, whatever it is, we want to give you a chance to share.  The HUB's annual Homeschool Showcase will be held Thursday May 10th from 6-8 pm at Lake Michigan College's Bertrand campus in Niles.  You do not need to be a member of the Homeschool HUB to participate.  All homeschoolers are welcome.  Contact Diane Day for info or to arrange for a performance/speech/skit, etc.  269-370-4589 or joharding_20@yahoo.com.

2) Silverhawks Fundraiser Available

The HUB is here to support all area homeschoolers.....this opportunity is available to any homeschool group or organization.  Adults and students ages 16 and up can work at the South Bend Silverhawks baseball game concessions stands this spring and summer.  We arrive about an hour before the game starts and work until it ends.  The Silverhawks donate $35/worker to the HUB.  We will pass the money along to any homeschool group or organization (sports team, Girl Scout troop, support group, robotics team, etc.) minus 10% for the HUB.  So a group of fifteen could work one evening and bring in almost $500 for their cause.  The first time you work you must purchase a baseball cap to wear....the cost is $5, and it comes out of your reimbursement check.  Also, a few day games and holiday games pay $40 instead of $35.  The first game is April 1st.  If you are interested call to get a schedule of available dates emailed to you.  Kathy Joyce 269 362-0651.....or email at kathyjoyce@yahoo.com.

3) Bethel College Hosts Michiana Elite Bird Fair

Bethel College is hosting the 2012 Michiana Elite Bird Fair on Saturday, March 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Wiekamp Athletic Center Gates Gymnasium. Royal Wings Aviary will present more than 30,000 square feet of displays as part of the largest bird fair in the Michiana area.

In attempts to improve the Potawatomi Zoo, offer quality family time and inform the public about exotic birds, the fair will feature two speakers: Dr. Peter Sakas, DVM, and Dr. Ric Berlinski, DVM. Both guests are well-known veterinarians. There will be a Q & A following their presentations.

The fair will also provide guests with the opportunity to purchase birds directly from breeders, as well as all of the products necessary to properly care for them. Guests may also bid on certificates from restaurants and businesses, bird products and autographed sports memorabilia during a silent auction.

The event is open to the public. Admission is $4 for adults; kids 10 and under are free. Free face painting and balloon sculptures will be available throughout the day. A portion of the fair's proceeds will benefit the Potawatomi Zoo and endangered bird species.

For more information, contact Allan or Pam at 574.273.1767 or email michianaelitebirdfair@comcast.net.
