2) Debate and Composition Classes

Tom Borek will be teaching a course in "Pre-College Writing."

Through a mixture of one-on-one feedback and group teaching experiences, over a 10-week period, each student will either be fully prepared for his or her first college paper or will make great progress toward that preparation. Mr. Borek will give weekly writing assignments, analyze/evaluate each assignment in detail, and teach whatever the student needs. Assignments will be individualized as well.

The progression is as follows:

1. Writing with appropriate grammar;
2. Writing in a formal voice;
3. Writing with improved organization and style;
4. Writing persuasively;
5. Researching;
6. Citing authority; and
7. Managing a very large research paper.

Each assignment will be manageable without tears, without excessive parental involvement, and without all-nighters.

$20 per week (Ask him about his qualifications.)

(Virtual participation via Skype is an option as well.)

Mr. Borek will also offer Speech & Debate for 10 weeks this semester. Each student will have a chance to give at least 9 speeches, which will be primarily oral arguments. Every student will have different needs. The instruction will be individualized.

The progression will be as follows:

1. Speaking with little or reduced fear;
2. Speaking with appropriate volume and inflection;
3. Speaking from an outline with eye contact;
4. Organizing an oral argument;
5. Using quotations and facts;
6. Responding to an argument extemporaneously;
7. Practicing for fluency.

$20 per week ($10 per week if taken with "Pre-College Writing")

Let Tom know if you'd like to join.

Regards,

Tom Borek
