1) Bethel to Host Star Parker Lecture on Poverty
 
Bethel's business department will be hosting a lecture on poverty given by Star Parker on Monday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Middleton Hall of Science – Octorium.

Parker graduated from Woodbury University with a bachelor's in marketing and business and is the founder and president of CURE, the Center for Urban Renewal and Education, a nonprofit think tank which promotes market-based public policy to fight poverty.

Now a social policy consultant, Parker consults with Republican legislators on numerous urban issues, has lectured on anti-poverty initiatives at more than 180 colleges and universities, and serves on the advisory boards for several national organizations. She has been featured in ABC's 20/20, Rush Limbaugh, Readers Digest, James Dobson, the 700 Club, Dr. George Grant, Christianity Today, James Robison, Newsmax, Charisma and World Magazine.

Parker will be speaking about her personal experience with welfare dependency and reckless living, and how her relationship with Christ helped her break the cycle of poverty. 2)  Upcoming Tiller Classes

Making Sourdough Bread - 155a (8 spots left)
In the class we will learn how to start and maintain a sourdough starter, including how to dry and re-hydrate a starter. We will make a sourdough seed bread and bake it, after which we will do a comparison with loaves that were restarted over night and baked the next day. There will also be instruction on how to make a firm starter, rye and whole wheat starters and trouble shooting for what to do if your starter becomes too acidic or sluggish. During the down time during class, we will make Traditional Irish brown bread and a fruit soda bread.

Carving I- Simple Spoons - 429a (Only 2 spots left!)
A beautiful, handcrafted utensil makes any task more pleasurable. Learn to whittle graceful wooden spoons for the kitchen or dinner table, selected from striking hardwoods. This uncomplicated project is an excellent introduction to or refinement of whittling skills and a great winter pastime. Please bring a straight whittling knife if you have one. Straight knives will be available for sale. A hook knife will be provided for students to keep. (Optional: bring a carving glove to protect your off hand from nicks.) Product: spoons. Carving I- Advanced Spoons - 429b (3 spots left!)
Once the basics of carving and whittling have been learned, the design possibilities expand! In this class, students will learn more advanced design elements using more tools and working on larger projects. Students will be making larger deeper spoons with more variations in design. Students are invited to bring green wood from home if desired. A long bend gouge in #7 or #8 sweep with a 20-30 mm width is required. (contact the office for source info) . Other tools will be supplied.

Knife Making - 315 (4 spots left)
Instructor Tim Carr shows you the care needed in forging high carbon blades. Refine hammer skills, make corrections with the file, and develop annealing and tempering techniques. Mount a fine wood handle to add beauty and contrast to the steel. Tim is active on the board of the Michigan Artist Blacksmiths' Association (MABA) and has been smithing for 18 years, 11 professionally. Smithing experience recommended. Product: knife.

Felting I - 197a (7 spots left)
Transform colorful merino wool roving into a unique and beautiful felt journal cover (journal included in materials fee). We will make our creations using our hands, imagination, and a little soap and water in a magical process called wet-felting which makes a strong, durable felt. This class is a great introduction to feltmaking.
Materials provided: merino wool roving, journal, fiber embellishments, soap, bubble wrap, plastic resist material, and written instructions. Please bring two old towels, wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting a bit wet or bring along a waterproof apron.

Basic Seed Starting - 131
It's easy to buy your plant starts at the local nursery or garden center. It can be expensive and the selection of vegetable or flower varieties can be extremely limited. Learn how to successfully start your seeds at home whether for a home garden or a small market garden.
Learn about seed starting set-ups, lighting, temperature requirements, soil basics, make simple seed starting soil, troubleshooting, and more. Make a seed starting set-up for your home. Discussions of cold frames, hardening off, watering, and plant nutritional needs will also take place.

Blacksmithing I - 310
This fast-paced introduction to smithing moves you through the fundamentals; basic hammer skills, heat treating, forge welding, and identification of "found" steels. It provides a foundation of experience on which to build with practice. With an anvil for each student, there is plenty of hands-on learning and superb coaching in this popular class. An excellent start for a hobby or new occupation. Product: chisel, decorative hook, etc.

Windsor Stools - 470
An excellent skills builder (and prerequisite) for the Windsor Chairs - 471 class. You will have the choice of making a tall stool or smaller milking type of stool. Begin by splitting leg blanks from a log and move on to turning green wood legs on a lathe. Carve the seat with hand tools. Besides improving your skills, you will have a Windsor stool, great for the kitchen or music studio.Product: 3 or 4 leg Windsor stool.

3)  Conference on Teen Health

The non-profit group a Positive Approach to Teen Health (PATH) is holding a conference on teen health. Their  mission is To equip, empower and encourage teens to make healthy choices through life skills, relationship and character building education.

The conference American Teens in Crisis and is geared toward parents, educators and others who care for children ages 8-18.

4)  New Creations Art Classes

Classes will begin March 19,20,and 21.

New Creations Art Offers 2013 Spring Art Classes in the Michiana Area for Students in Grades 1-12. Adults and home schoolers welcome!

Gloria Seitz, a certified K-12 art teacher, will be teaching classes on the topic of STYLES OF ART. This seven week class is designed to give students experience in a variety of styles of art while tying them in with an artist and period of art history. Students will study styles such as Romantic, Expressionism, Pointillism, Impressionism, Cubism, Action Painting, Naturalism, etc. A variety of mediums will be used. Older students will learn how to analyze paintings and will choose a style of their choice to copy in a painting. CLASSES WILL BEGIN ON MARCH 19,20,and 21 AND END MAY 7,8, and 9.The art festival will be held on Friday, May 10th.

Tuesdays, classes at Community Free Church in Niles are as follows: Ages 6-10 will meet at 10:30-11:30 a.m. Ages 9-13 meet from 11:45 -12:45 p.m. and 7th -adult meet from 1-2 p.m.

Wednesday classes meet at Trinity Free Church in South Bend. Ages 6-10 will meet at 10:30-11:30 a.m. Ages 9-13 meet from 11:45 -12:45 p.m. and 7th -adult meet from 1-2 p.m.

Thursday classes meet at Hobby Lobby in Mishawaka at the following times: Ages 6-10 will meet at 11:30-12:30 AND at 12:45-1:45 p.m. Ages 9-13 will meet at 2-3. 7th through adult will meet from 3:15-4:15. 8 through 13 year olds will meet from 4:15 -5:15 p.m.

The cost for the seven week classes is $70 for the first child and $5 LESS for each additional child. You will save $5 on the total cost if you pay by March 11. Cost includes supplies (Except sketch book, erasers, pencil, rulers, fine line Sharpie, and folder: These you will need to purchase. Older group will need to purchase a canvas midway through the class), room rental, and Art Festival. The Art Festival will be held on Friday, May 10. There will be no classes on Spring break week (April 1-5).

You may check out the classes and print out a registration form or sign up on line at www.newcreationsart.com Classes do fill up, so be sure to get your registration in early. You may reserve your spot by calling her at 574-271-8069 even before sending in your reservation. There is still room in these upcoming classes.

Gloria Seitz has taught children art for over 25 years. Her classes are designed to give students positive art experiences using a variety of mediums and techniques. Gloria offers fall, winter, and spring classes using a rotating curriculum which covers a comprehensive study of art. Each session is followed by an art festival which is a highlight of her classes. Next fall she will be teaching drawing classes. Winter of 2014 will focus on color, and in the Spring of 2014 students will be learning about the art of ancient cultures. 6)  Graduation 2013!!!

The Michiana Area Homeschoolers would like to invite all graduating seniors and parents, in the Michiana area, to join us as we plan for our 2013 cap and gown graduation ceremony. It is a wonderful way to acknowledge all our Lord has done and present a diploma to our graduate!

We will meet on Tuesday evenings 6:30- 8:00pm

7)  Valentine's Crafts for Kids

Come make Valentine crafts. Eat snacks. Make friends. Crafting supplies and snacks will be supplied!  If you are interested in coming please RSVP with how many children so I can be sure to have enough supplies (and snacks!). Hope to see you there!
