2) Looking for IN Homeschooler for Radio Interview

I'm looking for home schoolers in northwest Indiana who might be interested in joining their local public school sports teams, now that IHSAA has changed the rules. This is part of a piece I'm doing on Tim Tebow laws, like the one which recently passed in Tennessee.

3)  Fiddler on the Roof Jr Auditions

Children and youth ages 9-18 are invited to audition for the local production of Fiddler on the Roof Jr on Thursday, May 30, 6:30-8:30 p.m. or Saturday, June 1, 10 a.m.–noon at Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Grant St. in Niles. This special youth edition of one of Broadway's great masterpieces explores the universal theme of tradition as it cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness. The show features starring male, especially the main role of Tevye, and female roles with a strong chorus of singers and dancers. This show is jointly sponsored by Grace United Methodist Church, www.graceumcniles.org, and Gracing the Arts Fine Arts Center, gracingthearts.webs.com. 4) Summer Concert Cancellation

The James Newcomb Trumpet Concert on July 18 has been cancelled.  Mr. Newcomb will not be able to make the trip to South Bend on that day.


5)  Tiller's Upcoming classes

If you're interested in traditional farming or learning the skills used in Little House on the Prairie, check these classes out:

Draft Horse Training Seminar- RESCHEDULED!! This April, we had to cancel the one-day draft horse training seminar due to insufficient numbers. Then, one of the students in the Farming with Horses & Oxen class (June 3-7) wanted to see if Harlan would consider teaching the class to him after the Farming class. Harlan is willing so that student and most of the interns will be heading down to Harlan's farm on Saturday June 8. We are opening the class to anyone else who may be interested. As usual for this class, we will be car-pooling from Tillers at 8:30 am and will return in the early evening. If you are interested in the class, you can register on-line or call the office. The cost for the class is $100.

Farming with Oxen & Horses - 250
A unique opportunity to put skills in ox and horse handling to work. We immerse you in a wide variety of field workâ€"the last tillage and plantings, the first cutting of hay, and cultivating out early weeds. Part of each day is spent learning skills and the rest in field practice. Coaches help you hone field skills and draft animal handling. Assignments depend on skill, but we entrust you with real farm work. Activities flex with the weather. Minimum age: 12

Rope Making - 194
On small farms and in maritime activities, people depend on ropes for efficient handling and securing of cargo, sails, or livestock. This important skill has application for modern craft, home, and farm use. Learn the basics of laying up and making rope, as well as selection of appropriate materials. Students will make a simple hand-held rope maker to take home. In addition, we will teach several knots and splices.
Minimum age: 12

Wooden Spoke Shaves - 454
Make a fine flat-blade spoke shave with a beautiful hardwood body and handles. Spoke shaves are simple tools originally used to round the edges of wooden spokes. They are practical tools for any hand tool woodworker. Experiment with a variety of old spoke shaves, and learn how to shape your own. Product: spoke shave. Minimum age: 14

Wooden Forks & Rakes - 468
The self-sufficient homesteader should be able to make tools and supplies needed to run the farm-stead. Wooden forks and rakes used on the farm will be the focus of this class. Starting with a piece of green wood and standard wood working tools, learn to make functional and beautiful wooden forks and rakes. Each student will make a three tine pitch fork, a welch hay rake and a tine cutter to make the wooden rake teeth. Basis of steam bending will be explored along with traditional wooding working using the shaving horse, spoke shave and draw knife. Minimum Age: 14

Home Chicken Slaughtering - 171
With the increased interest in small scale chicken keeping, more people would like to relearn the skills related to home slaughtering of chickens. It is a skill which used to be had by many but for which instructors are now hard to find. Come to Tillers and learn with skilled instructors how to humanely slaughter and process your home raised chickens. There will also be a demonstration of duck processing. Product: One fresh chicken. Minimum age: 14

The World of the Scythe- 274
Join us for this one day class on the Austrian scythe. Demonstrations include hay mowing, cutting hillsides, ditches and under fences, hay management for the small farm, creating a keen cutting edge with a hammer and peening anvil and maintaining that edge by honing using a whetstone. We’ll mow an area and show how to manage the cut grass with a simple collection of hand tools. There will be plenty of hands-on instruction and practice. Learn to adjust the scythe to your body and correct movement for mowing. Bring your scythe to class if you have one, have it evaluated for fit and sharpness. Scythes will be provided to try. Larry will have scythes available for sale. NOTE: Class starts earlier than usual!
Minimum Age: 16 a/ June 16 Sun 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Tuition: $90
with Larry Cooper, a career blacksmith living in Siler City, NC, has been using a scythe since 2005 and teaches nationally.

Oxen Basics - 222
This comprehensive class creates skills in driving, training, and yoking in a sequence of hands-on experiences. Enjoy well-trained oxen responding to your voice commands. Learn to select, team, and care for oxen. Use low-stress training to teach calves. Drive teams hitched to various loads, practice field tasks, and try your hand at early shop skills to shape your own small yoke (added charges for yokes more than 6' bow width). If you have a team, ask about bringing it. Make this the outstanding experience of your year! Minimum age: 12

Manual Hay Baler Construction - 275
Do you have a small field which would be a perfect hay field? Then you need a manual hay baler to make your own hay bales to increase your self-sufficiency!
This class will be part demonstration and part student participation involved with building a manual hay baler. In order to complete the project in 2 days, some of the parts will be pre-made. Testing of the baler will take place during the final hours of the class. All students will get copies of the baler plans.

Rain Barrels - 502
Rain barrels are an ideal way to conserve water by collecting rain and reusing it for watering vegetation especially in times of drought. Where does our water come from and where does it go? Learn how to better use rainwater, build a rain barrel, and put that knowledge to use making a rain barrel to take home. Clean 55 gallon food grade drum, rain barrel parts, instructions and educational information is all included. Minimum age: 12

Wheelwrighting - 464
Learn to construct wooden wheels for wagons. See how small hubs are turned and mortised. Practice shaving spokes. Felloes are steam bent. Lend your hand as the team heat shrinks steel tires onto wheels in a cloud of steam. Wheelwrighting is a fascinating combination of early precision wood and metal working. Minimum age: 14

The HUB is a volunteer organization.  Without the support and participation of homeschool families, we can't function effectively.  There are several benefits of membership including a resource library that includes things like laptops, video cameras and other items to borrow.
