2) First Annual Michiana Homeschool Class Reunion--Sunday!

Hey Homeschoolers!  We want to start a yearly class reunion, so we can see all of our old friends again.  The first one will be on Sunday, August 25th from 3 - 8pm at Fuller's on Clear Lake in Buchanan.  The HUB will supply charcoal, lighter fluid, punch and water, and paper products.  Bring meat to grill or a main dish for your family and bring a side dish to share.  Normal admission to Fullers is $1.75 for age 12 and under and $3 for 13 - adult.  They have discounted the adult price to $2 for us....just tell them you are there for the homeschool reunion.

Here's how we picked the date....Jeff Joyce is now a naval officer and will be home on leave.  Jeff and Tara will be there (not Scott, dang it).....and we want a time when they can catch up with all the friends from the Flames, the Wildcats, robotics, chess, and all the other activities where we used to see everyone.  The weather is supposed to be great!

The HUB plans to make it a yearly tradition.  Come join the fun!  Fullers has a beach area, beach volleyball, canoes and kayaks to rent, and a concession with great ice cream cones.

Of course, any current homeschoolers are welcome too.  Y'all come!

5)  Mission Trip to Costa Rica

Greetings,

My name is Debby and I am the Team Administrator for Mission Opportunities Short Term Ministries and we send groups on short-term mission trips and I have a team that I think would be perfect for the home-schooled high school community. We work with a pastor in Costa Rica who would love to have a team of young people hold a sport camp and do evangelism with the youth in the two communities he works in. He also would the group to work with the youth so they can in turn share their faith with their family and friends. We are looking at home school groups due to the time of year the project has been requested for, January 2014, that is when the children in Costa Rica are out of school. I have attached a full team description to this email.

MOST has opportunities for teams from a single congregation or organization which consist of  members from one church.  If you have a smaller group from your church/organization, I can match you with another small group to make a full team.  We also have teams that need individuals on them so can place those folks, too, in just the right opportunity for them.

MOST provides pre-field training and information to prepare team members culturally, spiritually and logistically.  The team members receive training through a series of topical emails with video, website and documents. Each team will  meet with their assigned leader at least once. This meeting can be a live meeting if the team is from one location or conducted through a webinar for the teams who come from multiple destinations. We also provide a medical kit, nursing protocols which were written for us by a tropical disease specialist physician, and a 24/7 on call doctor service for all our teams.

We take care of all the field logistics, set up and provide supplemental health insurance for all team members.  The trip costs includes all the above mentioned pre-field materials plus the team's international air and ground transportation, housing, food, visas if required, and interpreter.  Basically everything is included in our trip cost except the cost to obtain a passport, baggage fees, meals at the airports and spending money.   We also provide a MOST Ministries Team Leader for pre-field training, on the field leadership and post field debriefing and reentry.  Our team leaders are CPR and First Aid certified and have been trained in our Crisis Management plan.  They have completed our training program and are qualified, experienced leaders exemplifying servant leadership.  We take care of everything so that team members can focus their energy on learning about missions and the field in which they'll serve, preparing for their specific mission project and sharing the Gospel.

I am happy to answer any questions you may have.

Blessings,
Debby Suchyta

6)  Free Writing Seminar

Taylor University is once again hosting a free seminar entitled "Discover the Writer Within You" in September. It will be led by published author and Director of Taylor's Professional Writing Department, Dr. Dennis E. Hensley. An identical seminar was given in May, but as it quickly reached capacity – we are hosting another session!

We welcome student and adult aspiring writers to attend, and hope that you might pass along this information to anyone who you think could benefit. Dr. Hensley will discuss the craft of professional writing as a career, writing techniques, navigating the publishing process, and manuscript marketing.

The seminar will be held in meeting room A at the Main Library in Ft. Wayne on Saturday, September 14th from 1:30pm to 4pm. The event is free, but as space is limited, we ask that participates preregister through our website at http://online.taylor.edu/writing.

Thank you for your time. Please feel free to copy and paste or forward the information in this email and my contact information to anyone who'd be interested in the seminar. I also attached a small graphic about the seminar for your use.

Sincerely,

7)  Host Families Needed

Dear Homeschoolera,

My name is Jennifer, and I am writing you today on behalf of YFU, a non-profit intercultural exchange program.  I believe this may be a wonderful opportunity for the homeschooling community to expand their families. As you already know, homeschool families have committed their lives to putting their children first.  They are open to new ways of learning, and they are fully committed to following an original educational journey.  Receiving a YFU International student can be educationally exciting for homeschooling families to learn person-to-person about other cultures, history, families and holidays.

Our International Students generally demonstrate – just by being who they are – terrific study habits which children may pick up on by example. YFU students must attend the local high school.  However, watching an International Student attend school is an introduction for homeschool teens who want to know more about school life. Host family members also become naturally included in key high school moments such as homecoming, sporting events, and prom.

We are seeking host families for international high school exchange students.  At YFU, our host families come in all shapes and sizes.  Right now, we have a number of students that have not yet been placed with an American host family.  Our deadline is August 31 to provide a host family and school enrollment for each international student.  With your support, we hope to further our mission of advancing intercultural understanding, mutual respect and social responsibility through educational exchanges for youth, families and communities.

We have a flyer available for you upon request,  We are hoping to find more families open to new and enriching experiences and willing to provide guidance, love and support to a young person embarking on a journey of self.

Thank you so much for your consideration.  Please contact me if you think you can help.

Very best regards,
Jennifer McKendree
