GENERAL INTEREST

G1)  International Debate Competition for high school students

G1)  International Debate Competition for high school students

The Bickel & Brewer Foundation and New York University invite your students to participate in the International Public Policy Forum (IPPF). Founded in 2001, the IPPF is an international debate competition for high school students - but this is not your average debate tournament. The IPPF is the only debate contest that combines persuasive essay writing with oral argumentation.

The competition begins in October, as teams submit essays on the IPPF topic, "Resolved: As a last resort, unilateral military force is justified to minimize nuclear weapons proliferation." Judges review these essays and select the "Top 64" teams. These teams earn cash awards and advance into a single-elimination, written debate tournament.

Individual matches begin immediately via e-mail, with one team affirming the resolution and the other negating it. Judges review the essays in the order they were presented, and winning teams advance to the next round. This process continues until the final eight teams emerge!

The final eight teams earn an all-expenses-paid trip to the IPPF Finals in New York City, where students engage in a series of oral debates before some of the world's foremost experts in debate, politics, business, and law. The IPPF World Champion receives a $10,000 grand prize!

How to Participate

To participate in the competition, form a team and register at www.ippfdebate.com/register. The registration deadline is October 15, 2013. Teams are typically comprised of three to eight students. There is no fee to participate in the IPPF.

After forming a team, students should draft a 2,800 word qualifying round essay on the IPPF topic, "Resolved: As a last resort, unilateral military force is justified to minimize nuclear weapons proliferation."

A topic primer has been written that can serve as a guide in the construction of your team's qualifying round essay. To access the primer, please visit this link:  www.bickelbrewer.com/pdf/2013-14_IPPF_Topic_Primer.pdf .

Essays may be written from an affirmative or negative perspective. Essays must be submitted to ippf@bickelbrewer.com by October 22, 2013. The "Top 64" teams will be announced on November 5, 2013.These teams earn cash awards and immediately enter into a single-elimination, written debate tournament.

In 2012, a home school team from Plano, Texas, competed in the IPPF Finals in New York City. We hope to have your students involved in our 13th annual competition!
