GENERAL INTEREST

G1) Brain Warmer Upper
G2)  Political Event for Teens
G3)  Free Christian Book
G4)  Free online Spanish and French Lessons
G5) Visual Arts Contest for Adults and Kids

G1) Brain Warmer Upper

This week's puzzle:

Pretentious Proverbs

1.The total entity of substances which exhibit a reflection of light particles in awesome profusion are not necessarily composed of a soft, yellow metallic substance.

2. A couple offers possibility of camaraderie, while trebly aggregates often have the appearances of a multitude.

3. A member of the class of Aves that energizes rapidly from a state of nocturnal hibernation is able to seize by force or stratagem the lumbrious terristris.

4. Homo sapiens who inhabit abodes composed of pellucid substances containing silicon materials should be prudent of casting hard cobbles.

Answer to last week's puzzle:

Derek was the culprit.

Looking at Brian's statement, if it was Charles, then Brian was lying in his first statement, which makes the second statement true. Which would mean that it was both Charles and Alan. So it can't be Charles.

Which means Derek was lying in his first statement, which makes the second statement true. Therefore it can't be Alan.

So Eric's second statement must be false, meaning his first statement was true, therefore it was Derek.

G2)  Political Event for Teens

HSLDA is organizing Student Action Teams for the upcoming election.  They say:

If you want national leaders who support educational freedom, who stand for the rights of the weak and defenseless, and who are committed to responsible government, I invite you to take part.

The future of the United States Senate hangs in the balance, and you can make a difference. Student Action Teams put you and your students on the front lines of the closest races in our nation—the races where every vote matters and you have the ability to bring in that last vote.

The dates of participation in a Student Action Team (SAT) are October 31–November 5. The 31st and the 5th are travel days; the remaining four days will be an exciting, hands-on political education. GenJ and the HSLDA PAC ensure your hotel, food, and local travel. (We also often cover travel to and from the SAT location.) Our experienced team leaders and directors not only guide you through the campaign experience, but also teach about the methods, reasons, and design of our political system.

Students 11-13 may participate with a parent. Students 14-19 may participate on their own with parental permission.  Parents are welcome to participate as chaperones.  For more information:  https://www.generationjoshua.org/dnn/Experience/StudentActionTeams/tabid/450/Default.aspx

G3)  Free Christian Book

Gospel for Asia is offering No Longer a Slumdog, a book full of stories of children in crisis who were rescued, for free.  There could be some tie-in with cultural studies or social studies for homeschoolers.  The book is free, and there are no shipping charges.  Mobile and audio downloads are also available for free.

Free book:  www.gfa.org/book/

G4)  Free online Spanish and French Lessons

With over 300 Spanish and French lessons, including hours and hours of video instruction, the ULAT (Universal Language Acquisition Tool) offers classroom teachers, independent study students and homeschooling families, absolutely free of charge, access to world language instruction of the highest caliber.  The ULAT gives students more than a mere scholastic knowledge of a language's structure.  Thanks to its use of the natural language acquisition sequence, the ULAT enables students to actually speak the language they are studying with increasing fluency, as testified by feedback from educators and from students it has helped to save thousands in college tuition.  Go to www.theulat.com and click on "INDEPENDENT" to access the ULAT's beginning Spanish I and French I courses.

The judge will also provide a written critique. For art entries, the judges will be available to talk and provide feedback to the students. For all entries, the student will receive a rating and a corresponding rating ribbon. The festival is non-competitive, with the main purpose being to give an opportunity for the students to perform and receive feedback.

As a former homeschool student myself, I can tell you that this is an excellent opportunity for homeschooled elementary students! It provides a goal to work toward, as well as an opportunity to receive feedback from excellent judges. I teach music lessons to my younger siblings, and their participation in this festival is motivating their practicing and preparation!

Our purpose is to give as many elementary students as possible an opportunity to develop fine arts skills that can be used in future ministry, glorifying Christ with their God-given talents.

To register for the Elementary Fine Arts Festival as a group, please contact me by November 1st. To register as individual families, please contact me by December 31st. The attached brochure contains more details on the event and its fees (just $2 for student registration and $6 for an individual event).

Please pass this on to any homeschoolers you may know who are involved in fine arts and would benefit from an opportunity like this!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
