GENERAL INTEREST

G1) Brain Warmer Upper
G2)  Educator Appreciation Days
G3)  Essay/Video Contest for High School Students
G4)  Archery Lessons for Homeschoolers

G1) Brain Warmer Upper

This week's puzzle:

Four angels sat on the Christmas tree amidst other ornaments. Two had blue halos and two - yellow. However, none of them could see above his head. Angel A sat on the top branch and could see the angels B and C, who sat below him. Angel B, could see angel C who sat on the lower branch. And angel D stood at the base of the tree obscured from view by a thicket of branches, so no one could see him and he could not see anyone either.
Which one of them could be the first to guess the color of his halo and speak it out loud for all other angels to hear?

Answer to last week's puzzles:

1. All that glitters is not gold.
2. Two's company, three's a crowd.
3. The early bird gets the worm.
4. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

G2)  Educator Appreciation Days

October 11-19th is Educator Appreciation Week at Barnes and Noble.  Check local stores for special events.  Homeschool Parents/Teachers are included, and discounts up to 25% off are offered.  You may need to bring a homeschool educator ID card, homeshccool organization membership card, or letter of approval to homeschool to "prove" you homeschool.

G3)  Essay/Video Contest for High School Students

The First Freedom Student Competition is a first-semester national essay and video contest. It offers high-school students an opportunity to compete for $2,500 awards as they examine the history and current-day relevance of religious freedom, and then, by written essay or video production, present their evaluation. The competition is open to students in the United States and U.S. territories, and to American schools and American home-schooled students worldwide. We invite 9th — 12th grade students at all levels of academic placement to participate.

The right to religious freedom is set forth in constitutional and international human-rights law. Today's youth play an important role in upholding and strengthening this liberty; therefore, the First Freedom Student Competition has been developed to:

    Help high-school students better understand religious freedom — its history and current significance;
    Encourage high-school students to explore their individual and civic rights to and responsibilities for religious freedom;
    Engage high-school teachers and students in the study of American history and the First Amendment; and
    Challenge high-school students to strengthen their analytic writing and media skills.

The online student registration deadline is Monday, November 17, 2014. The postmark deadline for mailing the entry and its accompanying materials is the following Monday, November 24, 2014. Click here for more details: http://www.firstfreedom.org

G4)  Free Archery Lessons for Homeschoolers

Hello,

My name is Heather Myers.  I am contacting you today as a home educated family from Montana.  We have started a website called EasyArcheryLessons.com, and we would love to have your input and advice when it comes to reaching out to those in the home educated community.  We have a passion for sharing our knowledge of the sport of archery with kids of all ages.

What I'm asking of you, is that you pass along our website to those in your community as an option for learning archery.  Our website is FREE and many lessons are already provided online.  In addition, we would be grateful if you would take 30 seconds and answer a one question survey on our website.  This survey will help us determine the best route for providing the most helpful learning tools to those interested in the home school community nationwide. The link provided will take you directly to the survey.

4) My Green School Art Contest for K-5 MI Students

Welcome to the 5th Annual My Green School Art Contest! Though the school year has just begun, Earth Day and the application deadline for the My Green School Art Contest will be here before we know it, so there is no better time to start helping your students plan their submissions!  Entries will be due April 1, 2015

Last Spring, our judges reviewed over 500 entries for the My Green School Art Contest from students in Kindergarten through fifth grade across the state. The winners from each grade level were celebrated at the Michigan Earth Day Festival and at a luncheon held in their honor. Their art has been traveling across Michigan for the past few months, inspiring others to pursue green projects in school, at home and in their communities.

Check out this video to learn more about last year's contest:  http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/story/24895423/foxe-my-green-school-art-contest
