1) Invitation to take CTE classes at Buchanan High School


We've been asked to let homeschoolers know that they are welcome to take any of the 3 CTE programs offered at Buchanan High School.  They offer Culinary Arts, Cisco Network Administration, and Sports Medicine.  These are available to high school juniors and seniors, who would spend 3 hours in the mornings at the high school in the classes.  Buchanan is taking sign-ups for next fall now.  If you are interested please contact counselor Sonia Barlow at 695-8405.


2) Symphony Orchestra and University Singers Concert


The Andrews University Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Claudio Gonzalez and University Chorale with Chorus Master Stephen Zork are performing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 9:00 P.M.


This performance will feature Julia Lindsay, soprano, Chi Yong Yun, mezzo-soprano, Juan Carlos Rodriguez, tenor, and Stephen Zork, baritone.


Also performed in this concert is Romance No.2 in F Major, Op. 50 with Carla Trynchuk, violin.


Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens. There will be a Pre-concert Talk at 8:45 with Dr. Lilianne Doukhan.


3) Build a Toy Boat Class

Last week we forgot to include the sign-up deadline for this class.  It's May 1st.

This homeschool class for ages 9 and up (younger if accompanied by a parent), will take place at the Niles High School shop.  Tom Hurst, an industrial arts instructor there is offering the class which meets for two sessions on May 17 & 20 from 3:30 – 5:30.
Day one 2 hours stitch and glue the hull.
Day two 2 hours sand and paint with acrylics.
Boats will have to be picked up on a third day, after the paint has dried. 
Tom has taught this class, and classes on building a canoe or sea kayak, at Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph .  The cost for the class is $40 and includes all materials.  For one fee, Tom encourages a parent to come and share in the project with their student.  Class size is 8 – 20.  To sign up call Kathy Joyce at 269 695-1654.

 
 
4) Homeschool Showcase on May 1st


A new addition to the Showcase -- from 12:30 - 2pm we will have chess lessons and some fun playing opportunities.  This will be run by Marty Klubeck, homeschool dad and chess player extraordinaire!  All ages and skill levels can participate.


5) Robotics and Fab Lab summer camps


These week long summer camps at LMC were announced several weeks ago.  They are offering Robotics, Engineering & Fab Lab, and Entrepreneurship & Fab Lab.  This is just a reminder in case you haven't signed up yet but were planning to do so.  Fliers about these camps go out this week to all the public schools.  If you want to be assured of a spot call 269 695-2990 to sign up.

Summer Art Camps for Kids with Vincent Dominello
Beginning the week of June 7 to the week of August 16
One week sessions meeting Monday through Friday
5-7 years - 9:00 am to 10:00 am | $45 including all materials and snack each day
8-12 years - 10:30 am to 12:30 pm | $80 including all materials and snack each day


Join Mr. Vince during summer vacation for week-long art camps. Students will work on age-appropriate projects learning drawing, painting, printmaking, use of materials, and end the summer with a special exhibit of art completed during camp sessions. 


Summer Open Studio for Kids with Vincent Dominello
Monday through Friday
5-7 years - 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm
8 Sessions - $45 members/$55 non-members
8-12 years - 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm 
8 Sessions - $95 members/$105 non-members


Parents may take advantage of the flexibility of "Open Studio" by purchasing 8 sessions with the option of choosing when to bring their children to Open Studio. Classes do not need to be consecutive. Young artists will enjoy exploring the fundamentals of drawing and painting. The goal of this program is to develop children's confidence in their ability to create using a wide variety of media including oil and soft pastels, watercolor, acrylics, tempra, graphite, and charcoal.


For Boys Only!! with Heather Murray


Beginning the week of June 7 through July 26
Weekly art camps designed specifically for boys age 5 to 12 years
Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
3:30 pm to 5:00 pm  $50 per week including all supplies and snacks
Registration for each additional week—$45 
Heather Murray, MFA, knows what boys like in art. As a former camp art director and mother of three sons, she will lead young boys through a fun summer of creativity. Whether it's fantasy creatures, cars, bugs, warriors, or space ships boys like, she will cover them all. With a wealth of experience, Heather will strengthen camper's skills in drawing and painting while introducing them to a variety of stimulating art materials. Register for one week or more. There will be different activities introduced each week.
