1) Basketball Class

All  through 17 are invited to participate in a 12-week basketball class.  Students learn the game rules, hone their skills, practice Christian sportsmanship, and get a huge dose of fun exercise.

Classes are 4:00 to 5:30 pm on the following dates:
January 9, 23, 30
February 6, 13, 27
March 5, 12, 26
April 9, 16, 23

Location is the Niles Adventist School, 110 N. Fairview, Niles, Michigan.
Cost is $75 per student.  Niles and Berrien Springs public school partnership students may select this as a "community resource class."
Class size is limited to 16 students.

2)  Art Classes

Now that the holidays are almost over, it's time to think about January activities. If you can disseminate this information to your contacts I would appreciate it greatly. Hobby Lobby Classes begin January 5th! The Niles and Trinity classes begin on January 10th and 11th respectively. Please have families call me to reserve their spot. 574-271-8069.

NEW CREATIONS ART CLASSES FOR WINTER SEMESTER 2012

Gloria Seitz, a certified K-12 art teacher, will be teaching classes on the topic of Western Art History. This exciting class will be a seven week hands on discovery of the Renaissance through the 20th century of art and artists. A detailed time line including major movements in art will be covered. A trip to the Snite Museum of Art or the Art Institute of Chicago will conclude our study.  The middle and advanced classes will be selecting an artist of their choice to study.

CLASSES WILL BEGIN ON Thursday, January 5th at Hobby Lobby, Tuesday, January 10th  at Community EFC in Niles, and Wednesday, January 11th at Trinity EFC in South Bend. The last week in February will be reserved as a makeup week in case of snow days and the Art Festival will be held on Friday, March 2nd  at 7 p.m.

Tuesdays, classes at Community Free Church in Niles are as follows:  Ages 6-10 will meet at 10:30-11:30 a.m. Ages 9-13 meet from 11:45 -12:45 p.m. and 7th -adult meet from 1-2 p.m.

Wednesday classes meet at Trinity Free Church in South Bend. Ages 6-10 will meet at 10:30-11:30 a.m. Ages 9-13 meet from 11:45 -12:45 p.m. and 7th -adult meet from 1-2 p.m.

Thursday classes meet at Hobby Lobby in Mishawaka at the following times:  Ages 6-10 will meet at 11:30-12:30 AND at 12:45-1:45 p.m.. Ages 9-13 will meet at 2-3.  7th through adult will meet from 3:15 -4:15. 8 through 13 year olds will meet from 4:20 -5:30 p.m. (Extra time at end of day to allow for cleanup!)

The cost for the seven week classes is $70 for the first child and $5 LESS  for each additional child.  You will save $5 on the total cost if you pay by January 2.  Cost includes supplies (except those mentioned below), room rental, and Art Festival.  Please reserve your spot by calling Gloria at 574-271-8069. You may register your information on line and print out a registration form at www.newcreationsart.com.  Classes do fill up, so be sure to get your registration in early. Materials needed for the classes include 9x12" sketchbook, several sharpened pencils, a fine line Sharpie brand pen and folder for handouts. The 7th through adult class will also need a blank art journal (at least 8x10 without lines), a 12" ruler, 2H, HB, 2B and 4B drawing pencils, and a canvas. Canvas does not need to be purchased for the first class.

Board Week @ The Library – A week of FREE family fun events, Monday January 2nd through Friday January 6th.

Reading away your fines!- January 2nd – January 7th – come read away your fines in the youth services department – earn $1 for every 15 minutes of reading up to $10.00.

Clue – The Library Edition – is a winter reading program starting Jan. 2 and ending March 29th for youth ages 11-17. Someone at the library has committed a heinous act. Your job is to find out who, where, and with what. You will receive clues for every book you read (limit 3 per check in). You may check in your books read for clues every Thursday at the Youth Services Desk. Just like the actual game you may only make one guess as to who, where and with what. A grand prize will be given to the first teen to figure out the murder. All other correct guesses will be entered into a prize raffle to be revealed at the Grand Finale on April 6th. Sign up to receive your bookmark- which you will use to keep track of your clues - and books read.

Thomas the Train Party – Join us for a Thomas the Train Party on January 21st, 2012 at 10:30am, for ages 2-5. Come listen to a story, watch a short video, make a craft and enjoy a snack. Registration is required. Call 269–683-8545 x106 or email youthservices@nileslibrary.net.

Evening Storytime – a NEW evening story time will be held the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30. Come listen to stories, sing songs, and make a fun craft. Tuesday January 10th's theme will be Blue.

Chips 'n' a Chapter - a NEW after school program starting January 9th, for grades 1-5 will meet on Mondays at 4:30 in the story room. Come kick back with a small snack and listen to a story. Questions? Call 269-683-8545 x106.

The Jr. Garden Club – January 14th at 1:00pm we will be learning about terrariums and making our own. Please stop by or call 269.683.8545 x106 to sign up.

Squealers – a NEW baby lap-sit program designed for birth – 18 months meets every Wednesday at 9:30am.
Squigglers - a lap-sit preschool program will be held at 10:00am and 11:00am every Wednesday.
Storytime - will be at 10:30am and 1:30pm every Wednesday.

Chess Club will meet on January 7th and January 21st at 10:00am. All skill levels welcome.

4) Mid-Winter Conference Early Registration/Discount Deadline

We are in the final countdown to MWC 2012!  You have until January 13 to get your pre-registration forms and payments sent in to our Jenison P.O. Box (see below).  Best MWC pricing options end that day!  All our special pricing, including scholarships, discounted rates for ministry, home school leadership and teens, as well as our single parent pricing ALL end on January 13.  After January 13 MWC registrations take place at the door.

5) 2012 INCH Conference

Plan now to come: May 10-12, 2012 to the 29th Annual MI Home Education Conference at the Lansing Convention Center in Downtown Lansing.   

While you may be focused on Christmas at the moment, Mother's Day will be here before you know it...and THAT is a weekend you need to have marked on your calendar!  The 2012 INCH Conference is coming... the 2nd weekend of May! Reserve May 10-12, 2012!  This year we will feature homeschool pioneer, Gregg Harris as our keynote speaker.

6) Tubing at Five Pines

Tubing at 5 Pines is scheduled for the following dates:
 
Friday, January 13, 2012 from 10 am - 3pm
Friday, February 17, 2012 from 10am - 3pm
 
They will have a place for lunch as well as the snack shop open.  Cost for tubing is $6, cost for skiing is $6 and both is $9.  This is a lot of fun so pray for snow!
 
5 Pines requires an assumption of risk form to be filled out and signed by each participant.  These will be available there.
 
If you have a group and would like to pick a specific date, let me know and I will attempt to divvy up the dates to eliminate overcrowding!
 
This event is open to all Homeschool families and friends.

Book Group 
Join Fernwood's book group at 10:30 am on January 28, as it discusses Eight Women, Two Model Ts and the American West by Joanne Wilke. You need not read the book to attend the meeting.

Fernwood Photo Contest
Hurry! The deadline to enter your Fernwood photos in our photography contest is January 22. Enter the youth, adult, or professional divisions. See the website for entry form and guidelines. And pick up your 2012 Fernwood desk calendar featuring photos from the 2010 photo contest.

St. Vincent's Day
In conjunction with her Gallery exhibit, Patricia Banker hosts a celebration for St. Vincent's Day. Patricia explains the traditions of St. Vincent of Saragossa as pateron saint of wine and vineyards, as well as other saints. Then raise a glass to honor St. Vincent by enjoying hors d'oeuvres and a sample of local wines. Fee $15 (Members $12). Register by January 19.

Fernwood could not share the magic of nature with more than 4000 children each year without the valuable help of volunteers. Interested in sharing nature with children? Curious Coyotes

Children ages 6-10 learn about all that makes winter special: snow, animal tracking, active birds at the feeders, and much more. Please dress for walking the trails. Fee $10 (Members $8).
 
Mosaic Pendants
Thursday, January 19, 10:00 am to noon
Mosaics instructor Martha Branson-Banks helps you make a one-of-a-kind mosaic pendant necklace, featuring cut glass. All materials are provided, but feel free to bring pieces of glass or other small items from home to incorporate into your creation. Fee $25 (Members $20). Register by January 17.

Terrariums
Saturday, January 28, 1:00-2:30 pm
Green up your winter with a living terrarium, and enjoy gardening on a miniature scale in the comfort of your home. Bring an interesting glass container and small decorative elements, if you wish, and Fernwood will provide the plants. Need some suggestions for containers? Call Fernwood for a bit of inspiration for this fun and easy winter gardening class. $30 (Members $24) Register by January 20.

Winter Yoga Series

Instructor Deirdre Guthrie of Yoga Glow teaches the fundamentals of the practice in this six-class series, including breathwork, alignment, and the development of both strength and flexibility. Make-up class the seventh week for those who sign up for the series and are unable to attend one practice. Drop-ins are welcome at $10 each, but it is suggested that you CALL AHEAD to ensure the class is running. Yoga mats and props included. Register by January 20 for the series! $60 (Members $48)

Winter Weekend at Higgins Lake, February 18-20

Smoky Mountains Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage,
April 24-29
Spring in the Smoky Mountains: Flowering plants, streams, waterfalls, songbirds, old-growth forests, and more. Over 100 programs are offered throughout the park, highlighting wildflowers, mountain ecology, wildlife, and much more. Attend the Sunday Journey program on January 15 for more information. Meijer Garden/Grand Rapids Public Museum Trip, March 23  Visit the Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park where colorful butterflies are sailing through the conservatory. After lunch (not included), enjoy exhibits of historic Grand Rapids, Native Americans, Michigan Civil War, Habitats, and much more at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. $75 (Members $60). Ireland, June 20 through July 1
Explore the great gardens of Ireland as well as historical, cultural, and religious sites. Reserve your spot on this popular tour by April 15. Isle Royale National Park, August 26 through 31
Lake Superior is home to our only island national park - Isle Royale. Enjoy dayhiking, sightseeing boat tours, canoeing, and ranger programs, and learn about the cultural, historical, and natural history of this unique island.  Meet biologists who study the predator and prey relationship between the island's moose and wolves, and see their large moose antler and bone collection. 9) Homeschool Days at the Creation Museum

As you resume your Homeschool classes after the holiday, the Creation Museum has once again provided the perfect way to kick off the new year.  For the months of January and February (Jan. 2 - Feb. 29, 2012), the Creation Museum will be running a special promotion especially for Homeschool families.

11) Adult Volunteer Opportunity

A) What do you do for fun in January?  I have an idea!  How about an opportunity to volunteer at the Winter Delights Festival?

WHAT:  Winter Delights Wine Festival

WHEN:  Saturday, January 21, 2012, 5-9 PM   REPORT T0 VOLUNTEER: 4:00 PM for Orientation
The preferred shift time and duration is for the duration of the event, from 5-9 PM. Training and orientation will begin at 4pm.

WHERE:  Sign-Up Table, North Lobby (just outside of the Grand Upton Hall), Mendel Center . The Mendel Center is located east of Interstate 94 Exit 30. Please proceed past the main College entry on Napier Avenue , and turn Left at Yore Avenue. Please park in the North/Auxiliary Lot of Parking Lot A.

ATTIRE: Black or Navy slacks and White collared shirt; comfortable shoes for standing.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Volunteers will be assigned to pour 1 oz. wine tastes at a booth for a winery, distributor or other vendor. Volunteers will be introduced to the vendor whose products they will be pouring, then will receive a brief orientation regarding pouring and the vendor's products. The vendor will remain in the booth to answer any questions about the product.

BREAKS: Volunteers will be allowed short breaks upon relief by another volunteer or staff member at the event. Volunteers may tour the event and relax in sitting areas adjacent to the event. Volunteers will receive (6) FOOD taste tickets.

Looking for a group?  Join the HUB!  We need you.

The HUB is a volunteer organization.  Without the support and participation of homeschool families, we can't function effectively.  There are several benefits of membership including a travel club and a resource library that includes things like books, games, laptops, video cameras and other items to borrow. Members receive first chance at events and classes when availability is limited.  The cost of membership is only $24/year.  Information about becoming a member is on the website at www.hshub.org

The Homeschool HUB is continuing to collect Campbell Soup labels, Campbell's Chunky Soup labels, Campbell's Healthy Request labels, Campbell's Select harvest, Franco-American, Pepperidge Farm, Spaghettios, Swanson, V-8 Beverages, V-8 Fusion, Prego Italian Sauces and Campbell's Food Service.   Give your labels to any board member or bring them to our homeschool functions.

We are still accepting Boxtops for education labels.  You can find these on many products.

Go to Boxtops for Education.org for more info, and then SAVE SAVE SAVE  those labels.  Each one nets 10 cents and every 10 cents adds up. You can give them to any HUB board director or bring them to any functions that we have.  Thank-you!
