MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1) Basketball Class

Basketball class.  All students ages 12 through 17 are invited to participate in a 12-week basketball class.  Students learn the game rules, hone their skills, practice Christian sportsmanship, and get a huge dose of fun exercise.

Classes are 4:00 to 5:30 pm on the following dates:
January 9, 23, 30
February 6, 13, 27
March 5, 12, 26
April 9, 16, 23

Location is the Niles Adventist School, 110 N. Fairview, Niles, Michigan.
Cost is $75 per student.  Niles and Berrien Springs public school partnership students may select this as a "community resource class."
Class size is limited to 16 students.

2)  Bethel's "Little Women The Musical"

The Bethel College theater department will present the musical performance of "Little Women," based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott. Show times are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 9 and Friday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center. Tickets go on sale Jan. 3.

The beloved story of the March sisters is timeless and deals with issues as relevant today as when they were written. Now, this wonderful narrative has been brought to life as an exhilarating new musical filled with glorious music, dancing and heart. "Little Women" embodies the complete theatrical experience for the entire family, guaranteeing a night filled with laughter, tears and a lifting of the spirit.

To purchase tickets, visit www.BethelCollege.edu/Tickets or call the ticket office at 574.807.7080, Mon.-Fri., 1-5 p.m. The Feb. 10 performance will be interpreted for the d/Deaf community. The cost is $15 for adults and $13 for seniors and students.


3) Tubing at Five Pines

Tubing at 5 Pines is scheduled for the following dates:
 
Friday, January 13, 2012 from 10 am - 3pm
Friday, February 17, 2012 from 10am - 3pm
 
They will have a place for lunch as well as the snack shop open.  Cost for tubing is $6, cost for skiing is $6 and both is $9.  This is a lot of fun so pray for snow!
 
5 Pines requires an assumption of risk form to be filled out and signed by each participant.  These will be available there.
 
If you have a group and would like to pick a specific date, let me know and I will attempt to divvy up the dates to eliminate overcrowding!
 
This event is open to all Homeschool families and friends.

4)  Volunteer Opportunity

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) offers Free Tax Return Preparation by Volunteers

The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) offers free tax help for taxpayers across southwest Michigan .  Become a trained community volunteer and assist low income citizens with free tax return preparation assistance, with free electronic filing (e-filing). To become a volunteer tax preparer you will need to become certified by the IRS.  Training begins on Saturday, January 7 in Niles and on Tuesday evening, January 10 in Benton Harbor .  If you would like more information please respond to this email.  Tax preparation will take place at a variety of sites and on a variety of days.  You can choose the sites and days that will work for your schedule.  This is a great volunteer opportunity to gain real life experience and would look great on your resume.

You can also serve as an intake volunteer, greeting people as they arrive, making sure their paperwork is in order and they have all necessary items before they see a tax preparer.  This is a great option to gain experience as you meet a wide variety of people.  A variety of days, times and sites available to fit your schedule.  A brief time of volunteer training will be provided to prepare you to familiarize you with the program.

If you or someone you know would benefit from this free service you can request a schedule of days and sites for this service.  Volunteers are available to serve them.

Looking for a group?  Join the HUB!  We need you.

The HUB is a volunteer organization.  Without the support and participation of homeschool families, we can't function effectively.  There are several benefits of membership including a travel club and a resource library that includes things like books, games, laptops, video cameras and other items to borrow. Members receive first chance at events and classes when availability is limited.  The cost of membership is only $24/year.  Information about becoming a member is on the website at www.hshub.org
