GENERAL INTEREST

G1)  Endangered Species Learning Opportunity

G1)  Endangered Species Learning Opportunity

This might be a fun research/learning opportunity...and kids can share their opinion and impact policy, too.

In a New York Times op-ed, Cornell Lab director John Fitzpatrick tells the Gunnison Sage-Grouse's remarkable story of discovery and disappearance. Known for centuries to the inhabitants of modern-day Colorado and Utah, it was only formally described as a new species in 2000—despite the bird's flamboyant displays and former popularity as a gamebird. As the bird's numbers continue to fall from changes to its sagebrush habitat, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is weighing listing the species under the Endangered Species Act—a move that would trigger important protections. To aid their decision they've issued a call for public comments, which are due by March 12.

1) Green School Art Contest

Local U.S. Green Building Council, Detroit Regional Chapter, Green Schools Advocacy Committee announces it's kick-off of the 3rd annual My Green School Art Contest. Partnering with the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) and local sponsors, this year's contest is expected to reach more students throughout Michigan.

The contest was developed by the Green Schools Advocacy Committee as one of their many programs to teach children in Michigan schools how a green school can positively impact their lives, their community and the environment.  "We are excited to announce the 3rd Annual My Green School Contest", said Connie Lilley, contest organizer and committee volunteer. "Every year we are amazed at the artistic ability, but more importantly, we can see that more and more students are learning the value of a green school and what it means to them."

The contest finalists will have t heir art work displayed at the MI Earth Day Fest and Michigan Energy Fair.  The artwork will then be displayed at local businesses and first place winning art work will be placed on the art wall at ecoSTORE USA in Auburn Hills, MI.  Students can enter on their own, or through their school.
