G4)  Free Online Computing Class for Kids

The class teaches kids how to use/program/get creative with a "Raspberry Pi".  This little computer costs only $25 or $35 (depending on the model) and is the size of a credit card!  The class is offered by Young Engineers of Today.  Check out the details below:

LIVE, FREE RASPBERRY PI WEBINAR
Getting Started with the Raspberry Pi

Students (10 and older) will learn how to setup, run and use a Raspberry Pi microcomputer*
This class will be live, conducted by an experienced teacher.
This class will be one hour long and meet on two occasions.
This class is great for kids who received a Raspberry Pi and are "unsure" how to proceed.
While the webinar is FREE, you will need your own Raspberry Pi.
Did we mention the class is FREE?
Already experienced Raspberry Pi user?  We will offer free mini courses in Python and Scratch (simple computer programming languages)
Would you rather build than program?  We have that covered too!
Email youngengineersoftoday@gmail.com to get signup information.
    Please check out YoungEngineersOfToday.com

The class will meet online Tuesday, July 16 and Thursday, July 18 at 1:00 PM Eastern (10:00 AM Pacific).

Why do we offer this class?

First, our mission is to help create the next generation of engineers and programmers.  We think that  Raspberry Pi helps kids of all ages become technology creators, not just consumers.
Second,  we want you to check out Young Engineers of Today.
We offer both virtual engineering classes for young people, as well as classes that meet physically.

What is the Raspberry Pi?

"The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It's a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video. We want to see it being used by kids all over the world to learn programming."  Also,we would like to add that the Raspberry Pi with its GPIO can do things your PC cannot do on its own.  You can turn on lights, motors and sense your environment using this little computer.

5)  Host Families Needed

I am an Educator with the 4-H Youth Development Program of Michigan State University Extension.  I coordinate an international exchange program which brings a delegation of youth (ages 12-16) from Japan to Michigan for 4 weeks this summer.  I am desperately searching for Michigan families who would be able to host a Japanese student in their home July 27-August 23, 2013.   Families do not need to be involved in the 4-H program in order to host, this program is open to ALL Michigan families!

A flyer with information about the exchange program, as well as the profiles of the Japanese youth who I need to find host families for is available to see here:http://www.msue.msu.edu/objects/content_revision/download.cfm/revision_id.630942/workspace_id.-30/Michigan%204-H%20Japan%20Delegate%20List.pdf/

Host families have the option of picking-up and dropping off their Japanese student in Dearborn, Lansing, Mount Pleasant, Grayling, Mackinaw City, or Marquette.  During the exchange, host families are not required to participate in any specific activities, although many host families choose to attend some local 4-H events, county fairs, or get together with other host families in their area.  Host families do not need to be able to speak Japanese in order to host.  The Japanese youth can sleep in a bedroom with a child of the same sex, but they do need to have their own bed or mattress.

Families interested in hosting one of the students may contact me to receive an application packet, or they can download a packet from here:http://4h.msue.msu.edu/uploads/files/2013%20Japan%20Summer%20Inbound%20-%20Host%20Family%20Application%20Packet.pdf

I found your homeschool group listed on a Michigan homeschooling resource website.  We generally have quite a few homeschool families participate in this exchange program, and the hands-on, experiential learning nature of the program fits especially well with the educational philosophies of many homeschooling families.  I would be greatly appreciative if you would consider sharing this with other families that you know who might be interested in hosting one of the remaining students!

If you'd like to learn more about this, and other international exchange programs offered by Michigan 4-H, please visithttp://4h.msue.msu.edu/programs/global_cultural_education/international_exchange_programs

I'd be grateful to answer any questions you have about the exchange.  Thank you very much for your time and consideration!
