GENERAL INTEREST

G1) Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge
G2)  Free Computer Programming Webinars

G1) Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge

The National Wildlife Refuge system protects birds, animals, plants, and unforgettable scenery that stir the mind and heart. Take a look at one of the most beautiful of all, the Yukon Delta NWR, with refuge biologist Brian McCaffery as your guide. Going beyond natural beauty, the refuge also plays a crucial role in conserving global populations of shorebirds that migrate to Asia and Australia every year.

G2) Free Computer Programming Webinars

Get help getting started with the Scratch Multimedia Programming Language, programming Minecraft using Python, and Alice 3D Programming Language with free, live webinars. Students 10 and older with minimal programming experience with an interest in technology or gaming -- or just the smarts to know how important coding is today!  Already have some programming experience?  There is always more to learn! Put your skills to the test and create , explore, and share games and more. Would you rather build than program?  We have that covered too.

For each subject, students will meet twice for hour-long webinars that introduce them to the Scratch, Minecraft Pi, and Alice programming languages. Scratch is an icon based programming language. By the end of our classes you will have built two basic games, but more importantly you will leave with the resources, knowledge, and confidence to build and explore Scratch (and even other languages!) on your own. Our Minecraft Pi webinar will introduce students to programming Minecraft through Python on their Raspberry Pi. They will learn how to install and run Minecraft Pi  and how to create through "hacking" with Python, from building structures to adding new features. Alice allows for fun exploration of  animation and gaming through their innovative 3D environment. Limitless possibility awaits after this simple introduction to an addictive, well constructed and organized programming language.

WHEN:

The Scratch class will meet online Monday, August 12 and Wednesday, August 14 at 4:30 PM Eastern.
The Minecraft-Pi class will meet online Monday, August 19 and Wednesday, August 21 at 4:30 PM Eastern.
The Alice class will meet online Tuesday, August 13 and Thursday, August 15 at 4:30 PM Eastern.

These classes will be live, conducted by an experienced teacher using webinar software. You will receive an invitation in your email after sign up. Please email youngengineersoftoday@gmail.com to get signup information or check us out at YoungEngineersOfToday.com

MICHIANA EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

2) Write That Book
3) Berrien Springs Partnership
4) Poetry in Motion Class

1) 3rd Annual Homeschool Info Night

If you teach a class, offer a service, or run a club or group that would be of interest to homeschoolers, you are invited to attend!  Scouts, theater, dance, gymnastics, art, music, tutoring, character building, photographers, piano tuners, whatever else you can think of...come hobnob with local homeschool families.  No charge to you.  Get the word out about what you have to offer.  The event will be at Lake Michigan College Bertrand Crossing campus in Niles, MI  August 29th from 6-8 pm.  Contact Andrea if you want a table:  andreamom001@gmail.com or 269-240-6094.

Homeschoolers, feel free to pass this on to people who have helped you or people you know of who serve homeschoolers!

2) Write That Book

Did you ever think of writing a book?  Well, now you can.  If you can write one to two pages, this course will help you write a book in easy steps.  The class will help students improve their creative writing skills and have fun with words and sentences while learning about the details and concepts of writing.  Students will be encouraged to improve from wherever they are rather than expected to reach an arbitrary standard.

We will work on choosing the type of book, developing characters, plots, description, and more.  The class is designed for 6th grade and up.  Adults interested in writing a book are welcome to take the class.  If you have a younger student who is interested and is able to write a one to two page story, you are also welcome to sign the student up.

The teacher is a published author with a teaching degree who has taught writing and composition for over ten years.  She loves encouraging writers of all abilities.  Class will meet for 1 ½ hours a week in Niles, MI Mondays at 1 pm starting September 9.  Cost is $15 per week (or $250 per semester paid in advance).  The class is also available through the Niles and Berrien Springs partnerships.  Contact Andrea for more info or to sign up.  andreamom001@gmail.com

3) Berrien Springs Partnership

Ready, Set, Register!  The Berrien Springs Partnership will begin registration July 28th, at 6 p.m., online through their website: www.BerrienSpringsPartnership.com.  Many new Community classes have been added and less virtual classes are required.  Equine science, private music lessons, more elementary art choices, gymnastics, nature classes and so much more, all at no cost to families!  Even more classes are still being added to our site, so check back frequently for updates.  Email Sharon Haynes for more information: shaynes@homeoftheshamrocks.org

4) Poetry in Motion Class

This is a special class that incorporates writing, acting, creating short pieces on stage, and performing them for the community directed by Donna Blue Lachman. Available to children from  grades 5-12.  Students will spend the first weeks playing improvisation games to get to know each other. Then they will write and bring in poems that they have written. We will have discussions of what good poetry is, and I will bring in examples of poetry written by kids of their age.  After we choose which poems we would like to act out, we will begin the workshop with improvisations, images, music, props and small set pieces. We will cast the appropriate kids in each role and then rehearse the short theater/poetry pieces. We will perform the series to the public. THIS IS GOING TO BE FUN!!!!!

The class will meet Wednesday afternoons in Niles, MI.  It will cost $350 per student per semester.  Contact Donna for more information: donnablue1@gmail.com or 269-426-8279
