1) Homeschool Chemistry for 2013-2014 at Andrews University

I'm sure you are enjoying your summer—but perhaps you are also beginning to realize just how soon the homeschool year will begin again. This fall Randy Graves will no longer be teaching Chemistry for homeschoolers at Andrews University, but I am picking up the mantle from him!

I have a BS in Chemistry and an MS in Theoretical Physical Chemistry—and I've worked as a substitute high school teacher. For many years I was a homeschooling mother—with five children who were homeschooled into high school (or very nearly there for the youngest). So I understand both the science of chemistry and the special magic of homeschooling. I am really looking forward to helping your students gain a love for God's creation at the molecular-level through the study of chemistry.

I'll be using the same curriculum that Randy Graves and Peggy Judge have used at the Andrews University-homeschool partnership for years, Jay Wile's Apologia Series Chemistry.

Requirements: Student must be in grade 9-12 and possess Algebra I math skills. Note, this means that in order to take Chemistry as a 9th-grader your student would have successfully completed Algebra in 8th grade.

Cost: A $75 deposit is needed by July 31st to cover lab costs for the year. $400 tuition needs to be received by August 20th.
Schedule: Classes will be held on Fridays from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m and begin on August 30th.
Enrollment: If fewer than 12 students enroll, the class will be canceled.

If you know of any area homeschooler who would qualify for the class and would like to learn more about chemistry, please let me know.

God bless,
Dana Johnston

3) Berrien Springs Partnership

Ready, Set, Register!  The Berrien Springs Partnership will begin registration July 28th, at 6 p.m., online through their website: www.BerrienSpringsPartnership.com.  Many new Community classes have been added and less virtual classes are required.  Equine science, private music lessons, more elementary art choices, gymnastics, nature classes and so much more, all at no cost to families!  Even more classes are still being added to our site, so check back frequently for updates.  Email Sharon Haynes for more information: shaynes@homeoftheshamrocks.org

4) T.C. Steele State Historic Site to celebrate 25 years of creativity

T.C. Steele State Historic Site will be mixing palates and palettes as food and art converge during the 25th anniversary of the Great Outdoor Art Contest & Local Tastings slated for Sept. 14 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Historic Site, located 4220 TC Steele Road in Brown County.

The event, done in conjunction with the birthday celebration of Historic Site namesake T.C. Steele, will feature artists painting from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The artwork will be judged at 2 p.m. as visitors enjoy music, sample tastings of local treats and wines and cast their ballots for the 'People's Choice' artist awards. The winning paintings will be announced at 3 p.m. The event has been lauded the granddaddy of Indiana paintouts by the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association (IPAPA).

"Our event gives today's artists and visitors a unique insight into Steele's art and method of painting--creating work en plein air, out-of-doors, sketching and painting their subjects quickly," said Andrea deTarnowsky, manager of T.C. Steele State Historic Site. "The contest is open to artists of all ages and levels of experience.  The winning artwork will be prominently displayed in T.C. Steele's Large Studio for 30 days following the event, for all to enjoy."

In addition to the art contest, the day will include an outdoor concert at 1 p.m. featuring local bluegrass favorites the White Lightning Boys. A specialty tasting fair featuring local artisanal wine and desserts is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m.  Event activities are free of charge to the general public

Participating artists must be pre-registered for the art contest. Artist registration forms will be available to download at www.tcsteele.org on August 1, or by calling 812.988.2785.

5)  Suessical the Musical--tomorrow!

Sussical the Musical final performance Saturday, July 20th at 7:30 pm.  Join the Cat in the Hat on this fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza!  All of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters are brought to life, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie, and all of the Whos of Whoville!

These classic, colorful tales are seamlessly woven together by Jojo, a young Who and "thinker of strange and wonderful thinks," making this musical one that appeals to all ages.  The score emerges as a Seussian gumbo of musical styles, ranging from Latin to pop, swing to gospel, and R & B to funk!  So let your toes tap, your fingers snap, and your imagination run wild, for Seussical!
