The fields are bursting with song and the woods are teeming with feathery creatures—or you might say feathery question marks. Our four-part Inside Birding video series will walk you through the four basic keys to identifying any bird: Size & Shape, Color Pattern, Behavior, and Habitat. The videos take you out in the field with Chris Wood and Jessie Barry, two members of Team Sapsucker (see above) for clear, fun, one-on-one instruction.

2)  Help a High School Exchange Student Next School Year

Hello!

My name is Stefanie Clark and I have a wonderful learning opportunity to share with you. I work with a non-profit organization called CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) and we work with high school foreign exchange students. I got involved in the program because I wanted to expose my children to different cultures from around the world. Little did I know that it would be so educational as well as a life changing experience!

CIEE works with students that are 15-18 years old that come from over 55 different countries and they come to the U.S. for an educational home stay for either 5 or 10 months. We are currently looking for host families in Michigan. The students typically attend the public schools in the district that the family resides with while they are in country. They come to see what it is like to live with an American family. They come with their own spending money and insurance, so you are providing them with room and meals and some transportation during their stay. Here is our website if you would like to learn more about our program http://www.ciee.org/highschool/

I have found, from experience, that hosting a student is the best way to expose your children and your family to other cultures…what better way than to learn it first hand? My son is actually traveling to Brazil to stay with my exchange son and his family.  Who would have ever guessed that we would have lifelong connections with families in different countries? It has brought the world to us!

People ask me, how does it work with families that homeschool their children and the student attends public school? Here is the response that many families have shared: "they go to school at a different school and we enjoy one another after they get home... We do our classes and they do theirs, it's not so strange!"

It was great for the exchange students to learn about the option of homeschooling because many of the countries we work with do not allow homeschooling. Some of our students have gone back and shared their experience and the positive things they learned about homeschooling from their host family with others in their country.

I would love to tell you more about this exciting experience! If you would like to find out more or see some of the amazing students we have available to share, please contact me, Stefanie Clark at sclark@ciee.org or call 877-872-0808. I would love to share more about our program and will be happy to get you in touch with our local representative in your area.

Thank you so much for your time!

4)  safeTALK Lunch & Learn Workshop

Suicide Alertness for Everyone--SafeTALK is a training that prepares anyone over the age of 15 to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. Most people with thoughts of suicide invite help to stay safe. Alert helpers know how to use these opportunities to support that desire for safety. As a safeTALK-trained suicide alert helper, you will be better able to:

move beyond common tendencies to miss, dismiss or avoid suicide; identify people who have thoughts of suicide; apply the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen and KeepSafe) to connect a person with suicide thoughts to suicide first aid, intervention caregivers.

In only a few hours, you will learn how to provide practical help to persons with thoughts of suicide. Expect to leave safeTALK more willing and able to perform an important helping role for persons with thoughts of suicide.

6)  South Bend Blue Sox Night

May 16, 2014 at Four Winds Field will be South Bend Blue Sox Night. This family fun and educational event is a celebration of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The League was founded in 1943 by Philip K. Wrigley during World War II, and the South Bend Blue Sox were one of the original 4 teams to play in the opening season of the AAGPBL.

Gates will open at Four Winds Field at 6:30 p.m. There will be a pre-game ceremony honoring the South Bend Blue Sox at 6:40 p.m. Betsy Jochum, a member of the original 1943 South Bend Blue Sox team, will participate in the pre-game ceremony and will be available afterwards in the Concourse to sign her baseball card. Other fun activities will include taking your picture as an AAGPBL player, seeing South Bend Blue Sox reproduction uniforms and entering drawings for special prizes! Families will also be able to stay and watch the South Bend Silver Hawks play the Fort Wayne TinCaps.

We are reaching out to you because we feel that this event is especially interesting for homeschooling families. Not only is it fun for the entire family, but it is an exciting and interactive way to teach your children about important historical events in our community.

For more information about the event call me or Marilyn Thompson at 574-235-9664 or visit www.centerforhistory.org.
